Thursday, March 18 for the JL Snyder Cut, it's going to be sliced up into a 4 part mini (but can also be seen in one 4 hour block, does that mean - hey, just binge it -or- we're going to offer a 4-hour movie version, without chapter/credit breaks?)

They're changing their story on how it's going to be released. Who the hell knows anymore.

This could go under television, but it's likely going to tie in strongly with the MCU films, so I'll put it here.
I bit the bullet and got Disney+ for WandaVision, and catching up with the first five eps has been great. It's a cool concept, and some of it is genuinely funnny when it's not being weird and spooky.
Paul Bettany brings a typically great performance (his have been the most consistently great performances in the MCU, with perhaps the exception of RDJ), but Elizabeth Olson is fantastic in this. I've liked her take on Wanda in the MCU, but she really shines in moments of WandaVision. She's really excellent.
For the moment Disney+ has been worth it. If I can get it to stop occasionally glitching with my Roku TV I'd be even happier.
And yeah, that big twist at the end of the latest episode is dynamite.

WandaVision was pretty good. I enjoyed the sitcom episodes more than the plot dump episodes though.
Finally got caught up on comic book flicks from last year, namely Netflix's The Old Guard and Extraction. It occurs to me that I'd have a much more favorable opinion of Netflix if they didn't make action movies that were...so...boring.
2020 Comic Book Movies: 1. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) 2. WW84 3. The New Mutants (HM. Children of the Sea, manga film from Japan but technically a 2019 flick) 4. The Old Guard 5. Bloodshot 6. Extraction
Not a great year, but I had some fun with DC. You don't get to say that every day.

Boy does it suck.

Okay, so I finished that disaster. Second half is better than the first, but holy hell. This is self-indulgent filmmaking gone horribly wrong. This movie is poorly paced, the script is wooden as hell, and it's just too much of everything. There is so much of this movie that can just be chipped away to make it leaner, more efficient. Instead, when Snyder interpreted that people wanted the Snyder Cut, he decided to just release a Snyder Uncut. I was curious about what his version would be like, but I didn't need to see every god damn thing you shot, bruh.
The best possible version of this movie is a halfway point between the Snyder Cut and the Whedon Cut. Whedon is much better at expressing emotion than Snyder is, and the Snyder Cut has a dreary, robotic tone. The scene where Victor first meets Diana is a nightmare in the Snyder Cut, because the only way Snyder can think of for Victor to express his existential crisis is for him to be pissy and stomping all over the place like a dinosaur. Whedon let Fisher express with his eyes over his body, expressing his frustration and depression through his tone. Meanwhile, take the stronger aspects of the Snyder Cut and pear it down. There's a decent not-over-three-hour movie waiting to be whittled into existence out of both of these movies.
But what really irks me about the Snyder Cut is how frustrating it is. And the movie is designed to intentionally frustrate by ending on a cliffhanger the annoy the fans who will never get sequels to this thing. But that's not what frustrates me. As always what frustrates me is that Snyder takes a decent idea and just crushes it with bombast. There is a certain idea here for a Justice League franchise I dig. The approach is very much let the Avengers be Star Wars and let Justice League be Lord of the Rings, an expansive trilogy that's trying to be a dazzling epic instead of flashy pulp. I don't hate that. And I can see where Snyder is headed and think to myself "Sounds like a good idea, but I don't trust you." And when let off the leash like he is here, I get reminded why. And it's why I can't blame WB for butchering the movie the way they did. This movie almost demands to be simpler.
Is it better than the Whedon Cut? I don't flapjacksing know. Probably. I know that by the end of it I really didn't care if it was better or not. I also know that I'd rather watch the Whedon Cut even only if it's for the same reason I'd rather watch Batman & Robin over Batman Returns. The latter is a bigger swing, but the former makes me giggle.

Time for a new trailer! Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings teaser just came out the other day, and I'm intrigued. I admit I know basically nothing of the character, outside the occasional historic background and issue listings. I knew of the character, just didn't know anything about him, other than he was known as the Master of Kung Fu.
A few thoughts:
* I like good martial arts/kung fu flicks as much as the next guy, but I'm definitely not hardcore (My favorite is Rumble In The Bronx. Saw it in a full theater on a whim with a buddy and it was one of the top 5 movie going experiences of my life. What a blast.) Just make it pleasing and entertaining. It doesn't have to be the greatest kung fu movie ever made, just make it a great Marvel movie where kung fu is a central element.
* I could be wrong about this, but I don't remember another MCU hero that outright rejected their parents'/father's principles of villainy and went on to be a good guy, so to speak. Tony Stark had problems with his dad, sure, but Howard wasn't a terrorist and certainly no bad guy. Now that I think about it, Nebula and Gamora would be examples, but neither headlines her own film.
* "That's not going to happen." A little echo of Captain America's Infinity War defiance in there, perhaps? Love it.
* "Who are you?" A question even many MCU fans are honestly asking, myself included. He answers with a badass pose and cool music cue. That's how you do it.
* Inclusion is damn important. Speaking as a white guy, we need more non-white guys as superheroes (and villains and all roles). For f*ck sake, there's room at the table for everyone. Here's hoping we'll see more of this.
I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I like every MCU movie on some level, but I hope they nail it. May even get me back in the theater. And where the hell is Black Widow? I was excited about that a year and a half ago. Ugh.

Oh wow, I like it. The Master of Kung Fu was one of my favorite comics from the 70s, and its best artist, Paul Gulacy, was very cinematic, and drew charcaters to look like actors (Marlon Brando, Robert Mitchum, of course Bruce Lee was cast as Shang Chi) so it was like a movie in comic book form.
It doesn't look like they are doing the spy-angle thing from the comics, there's no Leiko Wu (bummer) but I spotted Razor Fist (yay) and interesting that they are changing Fu Manchu into the Mandarin (or whatever they are calling him these days) with the 10 rings thing.

Anyway, I've been looking forward to this movie since they announced it. Love kung fu flicks, and while I'm not as familiar with Shang-Chi as I should be, a fantasy kung fu flick set in the Marvel universe is making me feel sexy.

Been enjoying the MCU television shows on Disney+. Loki has been no exception. Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston are fantastic together. The latest episode, which came out last night, got a hell of a reaction out of me. Mobius (played by Wilson) is pruned/killed after "waking up" and waxing nostalgic for his jet ski. I literally cried out "no!" when it happened. That doesn't happen much. I hope he's not gone for good. Such a good character and performance. Anyway, these shows have been really good. I also like how they're not releasing them all at once. It's nice to have something to look forward to, or to remember "oh yeah, new Loki tonight!" Good stuff.

For me, the best part of this week's episode was definitely the mid-credit scene. I think I literally *squeeee'd*.
