Back when the show got canceled on Sci-Fi the idea of straight to video episodes of the show was brought up. I think it was ultimately it was decided that the profits made from the video releases would not cover the cost of the show.
Whereas Rifftrax costs probably next to nothing to produce, and you don't even have to license a movie. So that's why Legends doesn't just re-start MST3K.

Anybody tried it out yet? Pasted from my post over at the news section: Well, I just watched Road House with Mike's commentary, and I thought it was splendid! It's a sinch to sync with the DVD. "Disembodio" really helps, too. For me, playing the movie on Windows Media Player with the Rifftrax riff track playing on iTunes worked best. I already owned Road House so all I needed to do was download the track (just 3 minutes) and find my copy of Road House and let the hilarity ensue. I have to admit; though Mike's a clean writer (which I admire and really enjoy about him), it's sort of different hearing him riff sex scenes and scenes with full-frontal nudity. Of course he remains classy while letting the movie have it (especially "Tinker")! I thought it was great! Here's to many more RiffTrax to come. Long live RiffTrax!

I checked it out last night too. It's awesome! I watched the DVD on the xbox, and plugged my ipod into the receiver with a long cable, so I sat on the couch and controlled both of those. The big question I had was keeping it in synch, since unlike most "Normal" DVD commentaries, the split second timing of the jokes is really important. I didn't find that synch issues were a problem at all, the track drifted a bit (someone explained to me why this happens, but I had no idea what they were talking about), but everytime the Disembaudio narrator was a bit off, it just took a quick little pause and unpause to synch it right back up up. Had to do that two or three times, but it wasn't annoying at all.
It was great to hear Mike again, and he gets off some great lines in a film ripe for mockery. My favs included the guy who lets you grope his wife for $20, ("In a deal like this one, nobody involved comes out with even a shred of dignity") and the responses to the classic line "I used to F*%# guys like you in prison."
Give it a try, you'll enjoy it! And it's worth supporting RiffTrax off the bat so that they'll no the market is there for future endeavors, which they strongly hint at possibly containing some special guests!

I agree - we should make a STRONG push to NEVER encourage bootlegging or allowing anybody to even turning a blind eye to friends making copies. The only way they will continue doing it is if they make a buck or two. If it becomes "shareware" we'll not enjoy NEARLY the number of them as we would want, as they will kill it immediately, and understandably so.
I bought my copy of Roadhouse RiffTrax and I hope everybody pledges that they will do the same for this and every single commentary they produce!

I just finished watching it a few minutes ago... I had to go out and buy the new edition that (coincidentally?) came out on Tuesday, but it was well worth it! (Plus the new version has a Kevin Smith commentary, so Roadhouse has clearly reached an elite plateau as a target of mass mockery!) I had some drift problems that were, as mentioned before, easily fixed by pausing my iPod a few times, but the riffs were generally spot-on. There was a lot of funny stuff, but the recurring comments about Swayze's constant need to go shirtless ("an 18:1 no-shirt-to-shirted ratio in this movie") sticks out. For only $1.99, you can't go wrong with this! (Oh, and the file size on my download was only 40 MB. I don't know if your mileage will vary depending on your computer settings.)

For people who don't know what RiffTrax is, please read the latest news on www.mst3kinfo.com/From my point of view (as an avid video-ist), its not going to be hard to take the MP3 track and mux it into the movie so you have Mikes commentary on the DVD so you dont need to play the mp3 and DVD seperately. I already did that. It was easy as pie. I even made a new cover for the "Rifftrax version for my shelf: I can't wait for more releases.

Yes it is Mike (and possibly other ex MST3K people). They use the name Mal Valour for fun...

Wow, that DVD cover is awesome. Did you create a DVD with the RiffTrax commentary built in?
