Lowtax, the head honcho at Something Awful and the guy who did that phone interview with Mike a few months back, confirmed on his messageboard today that he'll be on an upcoming Riff Trax. Which I think is great, because Lowtax is quite a funny fellow and has quite a large catalogue of god-awful movies! And (someone can correct me if I'm wrong on this) I believe this would be the first non-MST-related person to participate in a RT. He doesn't say what movie it'll be, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Uwe Boll flick. But then, maybe doing a Boll movie would be too easy a task for the guys.

There is somewhat of a discussion going on about this here in the RiffTrax forum. I'm going to try and keep an open mind about this (as much as I don't like the idea). And I'm sure I will be a little more critical of this rifftrax as Lowtax has yet to prove the he is funny to me.

www.somethingawful.comThat's Lowtax, more or less. I'm a member of the forums, and he's done some pretty funny stuff, both written as well as audio/video. He also got beat up by Uwe Boll, which may or may not be considered absolutely hilarious.

Loads of people on the board keep mentioning wanting to appeal to a wider audience, so the first person they get on...is some "internet celebrity"? Jesus. One to miss.

I'd really like to see Frank Coniff do some riffing myself. We only got to see him riff once and he was actually pretty good. Of course he was in character as TV's Frank, but still, i'd love to see a Rifftrax with him and Mike.

So will Lowtax keep himself in PG-13 territory?

Interesting. It's been a while since there's been a "stranger" involved. Could work well. I remember being extremely skeptical about Bill Corbett coming into the theater back in the day, but the quality of his work quickly won me over. Granted, he was taking over an established character, but he was still new and an unknown.
It could also be really awkward. I'll listen with interest.

I think this is an interesting way to take it. If it works, I applaud it. I mean, is it really "right" to keep this all within the MST3K circle? Who's to say the Brains are the only people worthy of being professional riffers? I'll wait and see.

I'm kinda teetering on the fence with this one. I want to keep an open mind and reserve judgment after I've viewed the trax.
However, I can't help think that there are lots of ex-Brains that would have been a good choice. Like: Frank or Mary-Jo...Trace...heck even Paul Chaplin!
RiffTrax claims that the reason they haven't been able to get any other MST alumni, is because of scheduling. But when asked at the RiffTrax Live! if they talk to the other alumni, they basically said 'no'. So I don't think they tried very hard at all.
But I guess I need to have faith in Mike and RiffTrax and their decision, and I will continue to wait and see how this one plays out.

I'm willing to give Lowtax a chance. I screamed bloody murder when Trace was first replaced with Bill. (I had only seen two Mst3k's at this time both Trace dominated.) But after only a month or so I learned to accept Bill, and now I even prefer him. (Please don't kill me!)
I mean what would happen if no one ever tried dunking a chocolate bar into peanut butter. There would be no Resse's, that's what! You know that's the second time I mentioned food in a post. This diet I'm on is killing me!

Eh, it's just one installment. I'm sure the Rifftrax folks will be watching the forums pretty hard to see what the general reaction is. If he tanks I'm sure he won't be back. But, I think this might be a positive thing. MST3K alumni aren't the only funny folk out there, and perhaps some new blood will be a good thing for the franchise (not that the old blood is running thin or anything).
Maybe Mike is trying to distance himself from the old show for some reason. Whatever is going on, I'll be watching with an open mind. I'm also wondering if Lowtax will be reigning in the potty mouth he uses in the "Trolls" review a bit.

I am sure he will, we know Mike is pretty clean, and people expect a certain level from him, he isn't going to suprise anyone with a Filthtrax!
