Doesn't anyone else think the punch is almost completely gone with the rifftrax? A lot of observations and retorts are lost in the "he's dumb" or "I am a really fat man." That's what I see. A lot of it seems to be weak, weak stuff compared to what they did before (in MST) and in the Filmcrew videos.
What say you?

There have been some that I've enjoyed just as much as classic Sci-Fi episodes. I haven't kept up with them all, so I haven't seen any too recently, but my main problem with them is that they seem to run out of steam more than on my favorite MST episodes. I suspect this is because they've done longer movies, and the movies are not edited down and broken up with commercial breaks like they are on the show. Main point: they vary a lot in quality, but there is quite a bit of good stuff. I would not say that, on the whole, they are "weak, weak" compared to the show. Just different. Also, I have no idea what the Filmcrew is up to in terms of quality.

The Wild Women of Wongo clip is classic stuff. That's what I'm talking about. But from what I see most of the rifftrax riffs are mostly like "this movie sucks!", "boy am I a stupid idiot" and "the director was braindead." The creativity and execution style has seemed to dissapear.

I've been going through watching season 8 of MST in between my RiffTrax viewings. And certainly the MST eps bring me more laughs then lots of the RiffTrax releases. I sorta think that RiffTrax has fallen flat as of late. At first I thought it was because I was tired of the type of movies they are riffing or maybe its because I am tired of listening to Mike and Kevin riff and I want Bill back. I certainly liked DD, BE and ST6 best of all because all 3 were in on it. I know they are trying with guest riffers, but there is certainly a difference in the riffing between current rifftrax and the MST eps.
Maybe its 'cause they had a team of writers with MST and I think RiffTrax is mainly Mike doing the writing (and guests too).
I'm gonna ride it out and see where it goes.

If you were talking about the Episode 1 RiffTrax specifically I would agree with you, but as a general comment about them I wouldn't agree.
Everyone has favourite MST3K episodes, and ones they dislike, hell I am hesitant to watch the early episodes at all, and I don't know when I will ever feel like watching Red Zone Cuba again. I don't think they expected universal love, for RiffTrax either.
You are kidding yourself if you think MST3K didn't take every cheap Fat potshot it could, check out something like Overdrawn at the Memory Bank or hell anything with Joe Don Baker in it, in those films half the jokes revolve around 'Joe Don is Fat hahah!'
I don't think they lost Teh Funnay in the 3 years since they made the Filmcrew DVDs, RiffTrax is going fine, so I don't think mine is an uncommon opinion. I also prefer all three guys, but I don't think Mike and Kevin are 'unfunny', but it's the same way I prefer Mike and Kevin to just Mike.
What types do you want to see Gammer? They have covered a reasonable spectrum, Willy Wonka is certainly something new, and there will be another something fairly diferent in a couple weeks.
My Beef is that I think they have been doing too many recent films, I want older cheese! But then this weeks movie Willy Wonka is their oldest yet at 1971,.. I want more 80s stuff specifically I guess.

At least with Overdrawn they made their fat jokes a lot less obvious. It's not about the pot shots themselves, it's about how they're pitched and the pitch seems to be off.
"With extreeeeme pork chops..."

Very well said Bathtub! I was thinking the similiar thoughts but didn't know how to put it as eloquently as you.
May I add that I love Mst3k and always will, but I am so hungry for a new episode and there are no more coming! Once I was so desperate for something new from Mst3k that I watched The Invasion of the Neptune Men (an episode I absolutely detest) twice.
Riff-trax is the closest thing I got to a brand new Mst3k episode. Is it as good as a new Mst3k epsiode? No. But it's the closest thing possible.

I'm not disputing that it's the closest thing we have. I'm just saying that it seems to lack now.

and I certainly not arguing that it falls flat in places, Aeon Flux is another one I probably won't watch again any time soon. But I don't think it's endemic to the whole project.

I've enjoyed every Rifftrax I've seen on some level. But as it's already been said, I've enjoyed some more than others. And I'll also say I'm one of those who wants to see more 80s and 90s cheese featured, and even less sci-fi and more stuff like Crossroads. There's so much to go for out there, and I think they're really handcuffing themselves on their potential.
I will say I'm impressed with the volume of work they've managed to put out. I thought I'd outrun their ability to produce these things, but I'm way behind, and I listen with a fair amount of regularity.
I'm still a solid fan, but I'm picky about my movie choices, too. Neil Patrick Harris could offer an interesting change of pace.
I'm still on board with Rifftrax and don't see any reason to change that.

Yeah well as I mentioned elsewhere that was at least in part possible by the buffer they built up before the RiffTrax live which they then released over time afterwards, theres been one gap, and hopefully it isn't some huge secret to mention that there will be another next week.

MST3K was the king and can't be matched. As for the low brow, simple humor, they were heading down that path through season 10 IMO. Lots of fart and weiner jokes in season 10.
Rifftrax are fun, not up to MST levels for the most part. But what is. Are they hitting a lul? I don't know, I loved T-3 and am hearing good things about the Star Wars trax. Crossroads and Daredevil and the horror flicks they've done (Halloween, Grudge and Troll 2) have all provided big laughs for me.
I don't think it's fair to say it's all simplistic. I think they've mixed in some brilliant esoteric work as well (I've listed several examples in my reviews). I've enjoyed the project for the most part.

I like rifftrax, the Star Wars both ones I loved, the ones with Mike, Bill and Keven are very special to me and funny. I have not like every one I've seen but so what they are still better then 90 percent of the other garbage posing as entertainment. We also really got to stop comparing these and the film guys or what ever Joel and the others to MST3K. That show was special, we will never see anther one like it again. Even if the original cast and writers got together for more show they would not be as good. When was the last time you saw a reunion show that was even good. It's hard to recapture past magic and even harder to live in that past. I say if rifftrax is what we got now enjoy it or not its your lose.

Funny how differently people see things. I'm a bit behind on them (through Over The Top) but I think they are on a roll and have great momentum. I like the mix of movies. I like the mix of hosts, with Mike being the anchor. I just referred my sister to the site and she bought ten downloads today.
Nothing can compare to MST and any comparisons are unfair. I take them for what they are and hope they keep coming for a long time to come.
