I don't think it's so much falling flat as it is my reaction to what is being riffed.
I have learned that if I am not going to enjoy the movie on some level, the rifftrax is not going to be sufficient to sustain my interest in watching the effort all the way through to the end. As such I have decided not to be a knee jerk completest for Rifftrax. This also holds for many of the MST3K episodes I own. Some I've viewed once and will never again because the movie sucked out loud so much that no amount of riffing could make me watch it again.

We also really got to stop comparing these to MST3K. That show was special, we will never see anther one like it again. Even if the original cast and writers got together for more show they would not be as good. When was the last time you saw a reunion show that was even good. It's hard to recapture past magic and even harder to live in that past. I say if rifftrax is what we got now enjoy it or not its your lose. Broadsword, I disagree. This is one of those rare instances where the original team could reunite and completely take up where they left off. Is it going to happen? No. But don't lump it in with Centenarian rock stars trying to re-live past glories. This crew could step into the writing room and rock; right after the initial; '...uh, hey! I heard you were doing that thing...' 'Um, yeah!! And you're doing that other thing now, right? ..' 'How is so-and so?...' Then the film would start running, they'd all comfortably settle in, and start trying to make each of the other wickedly funny people in the room laugh as they shouted out riffs. I know.

I just watched Danger: Death Ray, and while it's a fun episode I noticed there were a lot of "he's ugly", jokes. Really very similar to what they did with Wicker Man. It just made me think, Mike and co really hasn't strayed that far from the formula.
While MST appears to pack in a whole lot more jokes per episode in comparison to Riifftrax, perhaps making it easier to let a so called "failed quip" pass without much notice. The pattern was similar, Death Ray had a bunch of rifffs which were simply the guys noticing the characters looks (Ugly Europeans clapping, several comments of the frog faced mans face, etc). A few fart jokes mixed with observational, esoteric reference, voice-overs and call backs to earlier eps.
MST3Ks Death Ray and the recent Rifftrax I've watched (Over the Top/Aeon Flux/Wicker Man) both followed the same riff formula. I didn't hear any great deviation.

Let's be honest there were plenty of times that MST3K fell flat and ran out of steam as well, then suddenly something great would happen. Maybe a short break is called for. They had one over Xmas and came back very strong afterwards after it had started to lag a bit.

You only have to look at the Joe Don Baker episodes to realize that MST quite easily, and sometimes quite often, sank to stupid, low-brow humor. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. (For example, their comments about San Francisco International's cast were quite amusing, simply because they were mostly true. "David Hartman is an ugly, ugly man," the large-eared thug, etc.) When they did it on MST, they also tended to have better delivery, I find. Maybe it's because they were playing characters? Because they'd rehearsed more? There's definitely a difference somewhere in there.

I would love to find out. What I'm getting at is that will more then likely not be back but rifftrax is what we got now and came be very, very funny.

My problem is I HATE new and Hollywood movies. I find the B movies they did on MST3K sort of enjoyable, in a way that you can laugh at the movie itself as well as the jokes. And I definitely notice a difference in the delivery of the jokes in Rifftrax compared to MST3K. It just doesn't seem as "natural" as it used to.

For what it's worth... I enjoy the Rifftrax just because it's the only source of new material out there for me. Personally, I thought that as MST3K evolved into the SciFi era that they weren't as funny, just because it felt like they were spending more time laughing at their own jokes than just riffing the films. Seemed to me like in the CC era there wasn't as much of that... but maybe it's just me.

My problem is I HATE new and Hollywood movies. Me too. Even though I think Mike is the funniest guy on the planet, I can't sit through a bunch of the stuff they have picked so far. I wish they would do more pre-2000 movies. I've really enjoyed the stuff like Troll 2, Roadhouse, Halloween, Point Break, Over The Top..I understand their reasons for doing newer movies, but it would be cool if they threw some older movies in more often.
