I happened to have to go to Barnes and Nobles today and whom do I see but Rue McClanahan doing photo ops .. I had to keep in step with a youngster so I missed any chance to at least watch the book signing or whatever it was.
I looked next door at Best Buy for a copy of The Film Crew's "Hollywood After Dark"
Found a copy at FYE soon thereafter and bought the copy there at *gasp* full MSRP

I guess it's all a matter of if Bridget wants to be involved.

Ok, so I'v rewatched it a few times and I've softened just a little on my origanal reaction. Its not all that terrible. The theater portion is like an average SciFi episode (say...Gorgo, Delta Knights, Horrors or Spider Island) its mildy enjoyable but ultimatly forgettable/unquotable. However, I'm just as adamant as I was before when I said that the host segments are really, really embarrassingly bad. So, I will be getting the next one in hopes that its a bit better. (They're in LA, right? Can't they round up Frank, Trace or Joel to help them with the writing/performing? I mean, Mike LIVES with Bridget for crying out loud! Get her involved!) Actually, from what I understand, these were recorded in 2004 or so, before Mike moved to California.

Right, and Jim Mallon (being the apparently wonderful person that he is) was having trouble with the idea that other people would make money off of the MST setup that we all know he had so much to do with it being created.

I have it. I watched it. Its uh...not terrible. Let's just say...its better than Hamlet but unfortunatly worse than...most everything else. Firstly, its very disorienting not have the shadowrama at the bottom of the screen. Secondly, I now understand why MST had a large writing staff. Thirdly, Mike, Kevin and Bill can't write a sketch to save their asses. It isn't DREADFULLY awful, it just wasn't worth the $20. D+Let's hope the next one is better. i disagree. its ten times funnier than any Rifftrax i've seen. i absolutely loved it. MST3K caliber!

By MST3K caliber, I'd agree. Just as long as we're talking Season 9/10 caliber.

Right, and Jim Mallon (being the apparently wonderful person that he is) was having trouble with the idea that other people would make money off of the MST setup that we all know he had so much to do with it being created. If that is the case, than Jim Mallon is no better than any of the film distributers/producers who own the movies and refuse to allow Rhino Home Video to relelase the MST'ed versions of their movies.

The copyright notice at the end of the movie is '05. They announced these back in October with the poll to choose the first release on their website (which doesn't seem to have gotten a major update since). Maybe there's more than just Jim M's legal wrangling that kept this off the shelves for 18+ months. Any thoughts?
p.s. I'm in agreement with a lot of you - decent riffing (Kevin's Tom Waits was great), I didn't hate the host segments, but then the SFC era had lowered my expectations pretty strongly. I didn't miss shadowrama that much, especially since they seemed to do less and less with it as the years went by and they were able to throw in one or two 'radio' style gags capitalizing on their not being on camera. They definitely need more writers if they do additional releases.

And so the long awaited Film Crew DVD arrives. I must say this effort has more of the old MST3K feel than Rifftrax. The sketches, the choice of movies are all pretty derivative of the former effort. Seeing Rue Mcclanahan strip was something of a revelation, but I'm pretty sure I could have gone through the rest of my life without that knowledge. As a historian, I was curious about what sort of audience this movie was produced for. Burlesque afficianados? Detective magazine readers? Were the women who stripped before Rue famous burlesque queens? Was this just some sort of exercise in the reality the director and producer inhabited? Did they know Coleman Frances? Were they Coleman Frances in disguise? If so where were the light planes? OK. I've gone way off base here. I can't really tell if I liked this or not. I need to see it again. Maybe I need a few drinks beforehand. It was a little more "blue" than you normally expect from these guys. It certainly isn't a movie you want to watch with your young children unless you want to be pestered with uncomfortable questions for weeks afterwards. "Mommy, why that lady have fuzzy nipples? Does the lady like her fuzzy nipples?
