So, what if Mike Kevin and Bill (MKnB) had to choose to only do one or the other Rifftrax or Film Crew, which should they choose.
I think Rifftrax is a neat idea, but I haven't yet tried it. I have Star Trek V, but I haven't gotten around to queueing everything up and giving it a try, which leads to my first minus for rifftrax
- Rifftrax: It's kind of techy. You have to get the movie, play the movie and then have some way of playing the commentary and then you have to sink them up. This may or may not be easy, but in the end this limits the audience for rifftrax.
+ Film Crew: On the other hand a Film Crew DVD is a fully produced DVD, you pop it in and watch it.
+ Film Crew: This also means easier reach to a wider audience as Film Crew DVDs are sold as whole products and are available at most stores that sell DVDs (online anyway; I haven't looked for them at brick and mortar stores)
- Rifftrax: this is more up to opinion, but most of the movies Rifftrax riffs I have either already seen and have no interest in seeing again, or I haven't seen by choice cuz they looked crappy. But not fun crappy like the old cheesy ones that MST3K and now The Film Crew do.
+ Rifftrax: I can also see the other side of this, where people have no interest in seeing Steve Reeves in anything let alone Rue McClanahan stripping, but would love to see someone mock such horrid current day films as Daredevil or anything with Tom Cruise in it.
+ Film Crew: There's a plot and wrapper segments. This is opinion too, but I always like that MST3K had a plot behind it's bad movie riffing. Film Crew does this, and I enjoyed most of their host segments.
+ Rifftrax: since there are no host segments, Rifftrax can be more easily produced, and they're can be more made.
+ Rifftrax: since there are no movie rights, MKnB can riff any movie.
- Film Crew: they have to find movies with little to no licensing.
== I think they may be even on cost, with maybe a slight edge to Film Crew. You can get a Film Crew DVD online for about $12. I think the Rifftrax are around $3, and you can get a copy of the movie they are riffing for usually around $10-$15
Profit for MKnB? This is a tough one. If I had to, I would guess that MKnB get more of a cut from the Rifftrax stuff then they do from The Film Crew DVDs as there are less people to pay out. However, the potential audience for Rifftrax is smaller and it is easier to copy/share the Rifftrax.
+The Film Crew: As discussed above, there is a wider market for The Film Crew DVDs, and it's easier to grow brand recognition--they're actual DVDs that will sit on peoples DVD shelves. They've gotten actual reviews in publications (most good by the way).
I've read interviews with Mike where he says he thinks both could coexist and I think he's right, but if I had to pick one, I want The Film Crew.
Oh, and of course whoever does the flying tail kick will win the final knockdown monster battle.
