On the other hand, I generally agree about the FC host segments: they need serious work. But even so, I like seeing their faces and the premise of FC. It's a little more tangible than just an audio track for 1.5 to 2 hours. Yeah, the host segments were pretty weak but mercifully small in number. Part of the problem is that this kind of goofy humor works a whole lot better with puppets as opposed to middle-aged men. I think the host segments on Wild Women Wongo might have worked alright on MST3K. Here they were just awkward. (The host segments on Hollywood After Dark were just awful however you slice it, but I thought Mike’s racist rants on Giant of Marathon were actually quite funny). At any rate, clearly the only way to decide whether Film Crew or Rifftrax is better is to give us at least twenty to thirty more Film Crew tapes for a proper sample size. So hopefully they’ll get started on them soon.

Rifftrax has no time for host segments. Instead they kind of stuff them in during slower parts of the movie they're riffing. They're kind of like rants, usually with Disembaudio or whoever is riffing going off on some annoying tangent. Seems neither Rifftrax nor The Film Crew has been able to recapture that magic that made the great MST3K host segments great. And to be fair, the MST3K host segments were usually ok, mostly good and occasionally amazing. This is all making me realize I need to check out The Film Crew so I have a good reason to even comment. These guys just know how to take my money

Well, RiffTrax and The Film Crew has captured enough magic for me. I sure did miss their riffing and I feel their definitely back (one way or another).
I don't mind the host segments. At least one was pretty good (the Robecher segment involving the extreme closeups). The other ones are week, indeed. But I certainly don't expect those segments to be all that good right out of the gate. As with anything else, it takes time. If they do ever make more of these, I'll bet the segments will get better. But this is coming from someone who never thought the MST3K host segments were all that good to begin with (there'd be a winner every so often, but not usually).
