Alright, you've convinced me to open it ;D To be honest, it seems like you've agreed with quite a bit of the music I've posted here, so I trust your judgment. Oh no I wouldn't do that! ;D I haven't even gotten to the extremities of my collection on the Social Network yet! But Moon Safari is a lovely wee laid back gem. Even some of my more musically conservative mates love it. be warned though, it's very French in places!

Yup. "Be winged, free from the mire of men. Be winged, leave the dead soil to the dying. Inherit the wind, soar from the coils that asphyxiate you. Be winged and climb high, with a wingspan to humble mankind..."

Breathing Under Water, by Anoushka Shankar with Karsh Kale. Good mix of atmospheric instrumentals and vocals with a lot of (duh!) Indian influence.

I just ordered Roxy Music: The Thrill of It All! (The visual years.)
It's a DVD of ALL their videos and TV appearances in Europe.

I've been a big fan of the Teardrop Explodes (and Julian Cope) for ages, so I was excited to find this on iTunes. I've been wanting to replace my vinyl copy of their seminal first album Kilimanjaro, but I can't find the damn thing on CD or to download anywhere. So this was a good substitute; it's got some live-in-the-studio versions of songs from their first and second albums. I especially wanted it for the sublime "Poppies in the Field." The Prids have been recommended to me by a few people, so I picked up this EP to try them out. Stylistically, the four songs are kinda all over the place (which is not a bad thing). I think I like it, but it'll need a few more listens, I think. I also downloaded three individual songs to fill out the CD: Mazzy Star's lovely "Halah," Maria Friedman doing "Mein Herr" from Cabaret, and a very weird cover of "Mack the Knife" by Nick Cave.

Weezer, the Red AlbumThis is a good CD... for me to poop on! That's it, I'm done with Weezer, I'm never buying into the hype again. I keep hearing how this was their best in years, No, no it isn't. It's worse than Maladroit, it's worse than that time I ate Taco Bell and was out in the middle of the Oregon highway, miles from nowhere with the worse case of the sh$#@s! Would be nice if Rivers could buckle down and get serious about the craft of songwriting again. The first song reels you in, "Weezers back" it seems to say, but it's a smoke screen. The next song opens with a cheap Modest Mouse imitation, the 3rd sounds like flippin Mark McGrath and it goes into the header from there on out. I don't even want this garbage in my house, everytime I look at the cover I wanna throw it in the streets and run over it for every dollar I wasted. @#%&! Smilers, Aimee MannThank God someone respects the craft of songwriting. This took the sting off the other purchase. Aimee's treading familiar ground and I think she needs to start challenging herself musically. It's good, very very good. It's just very similar to other efforts. Lyrically though, she's a marvel. I remember when I was a kid and would get a new Beatles or Dylan album. I would read the lyrics as the music played. I haven't done that in a long time but I do it with Aimee. She writes poetry for people like me - the ones who aren't superstars, who struggle and go through the rounds every day. We need our anthems and she provides 'em. There were a few lyrics where my jaw dropped and I thought, "how can she know that. How can she understand how that feels". It'll take a few days before I know how I'd rank it with her others, but after 3 listens I can already tell she's got another winner. Yay!

LOL After a few listens I agree it strikes me as incredibly uneven. I really like "Troublemaker" and "The Angel and the One." "Pork and Beans" is okay. "Greatest Man In The World" makes me laugh. (Love the bit where Rivers sings falsetto). A lot of the other songs however--blah. (Surely there was room for a great unrelased older track like "My Brain Is Working Overtime" etc?)

I really liked the couple songs I've heard of Jill Tracy's, on the Dark Cabaret compilation and on iTunes. This is a very nice record, and older one of hers I think -- it's spooky, with lots of creepy distorted piano. The Daughters of Bristol were recommended to me; they're from Seattle, and they sound a lot like the Sisters of Mercy. This is an EP, and very good. To fill out the CD I also got a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Venus In Furs" by DeVotchKa.

Fanny - First Time In A Long Time -- The Reprise Recordings
This was released by Rhino Handmade. I never thought they'd see the light of day again. They still sound great!

Aside from Aimee Mann's decent release, 2008 has sucked on toast. Weezer sucked, even the usually relaible Supergrass put out a tepid blah CD and now Alice Cooper's newest, "Along Came a Spider" adds another turd to the fire.
It's uninspired to say the least. The work on the concept, the album art is all great, the music can't live up to that sadly. It's not drop dead horrible but it's the kind of familiar, tired music an aging rocker makes. AC has released some great stuff in the past 10 or so years, so he's fought the the good fight. But with Spider he falls prey to relying on old tricks. There's nothing fresh here.
After a few more listens I might add a review on the Discography thread. But so far, unless something strikes my fancy I don't anticipate a glowing write up.

I agree Weezer sucks royally nowadays I liked Make Believe(althogh I can't stand the song Beverly Hills) and thought they were back to writing good stuff but it seems Rivers is more concerned with looking like a gay cowboy than writing good music
recent puchases...Scars On Broadway...meh it's alright Daron needs to get back together with Serj...the whole is definitely better than the sum of it's parts
Blind Melon's new one is pretty good it's called For My Friends
Coldplay will never be as good as Radiohead they should stop now...their new one(Viva La Vida) is ok but it just makes you want to listen to Radiohead to hear the real deal
actually another CD I bought this past month is good but when I tell you all I'll probably lose any credibilty I might have had but what the hell MOTLEY CRUE-SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES...I realize that some people might have issues with this band...if you do it sucks like all their other stuff...but if you like me thought the first two albums were great and everything else save for Generation Swine was pretty half-assed...this album is a return to form of the first two albums

I kind of wanted to buy it, but I can't bring myself to it. Saw the Crue at a Rock Fest in Wisconsin about two years ago and Vince was SO hammered he couldn't remember the words to the songs. Shortest concert ever. I'd imagine Nikki and Tommy beat Vince's ass off stage. Mick would have joined the fray, but I understand it takes enough effort for him to stand on two legs, let alone exert the physical amount of effort to beat some ass. But he stood on the sidelines in support. In any case, I'm glad they've gone back to good. Just acquired the new Metallica album. Mmm...effing tasty.

That's not the actual cover, but I can't find artwork of the actual cover. Which is a shame, because I saw it at the store and it's very nice. Anyway, this is the lovely Amanda from the Dresden Dolls, doin' her first solo record. I've only listened to it once so far, but I really like it. It is, of course, still very Dolls-ish, but there are definitely other things going on, like jazzy horns and Ben Folds and what not. It's really good, but I knew I would probably like it because Amanda is awesome. To fill out the CD I also downloaded a couple of spare songs -- Robyn Hitchcock's sweetly goofy "My Wife and My Dead Wife" and the hysterical country-punk parody "Tough Sh*t Wilson" by Splodgenessabounds.
