I think most everyone can think of a band or artist that you thought for sure was going to be big but just didn't get over the hump. I always thought that the band The Smithereens was going to be much bigger then they turned out. Love their first album and the single "A Girl Like You" I played it for weeks but that was really the only commercial success they ever had.

Yeah their debut and "11" seemed to be the only albums received any attention. Maybe it was the Ramones syndrome, everything kind of sounded the same... then again that hasn't hurt Aerosmith any?
Been listening to the Music Machine and I'm amazed that Sean Bonniwell wasn't a star that was hailed as a genius. Part of it was studio interference, Sean had a vision which would have made "Turn On" one of rocks greatest albums. Buut, they hogged tied him, and forced him to record 4 lame-o covers (Cherry, Cherry - Ceeripes!) he didn't want on the LP (He did plan on one of the 5 included on the record)
It's sad because we'll never know how brilliant the LP would have been, (though we do have 7 originals which give a strong indication)
"Talk, Talk", their one big hit, wasn't even their best song. The other 3 singles never cracked the top 40. And some of their sound reminds me of the Doors. Why the Doors would be embraced a year or so later, and these guys were ignored. Can't figure it.
Bonniwell wrote unique lyrics, with interesting phrasing. He composed killer melodies and the arrangements were amazing. Yeah, the man was a control freak who alienated his band mates from what I've read (they didn't stay together long). But what a waste for us music fans. This guys name could/might have been listed there among the Dylan's and Lennon's, instead he's a forgotten footnote.
Sad

Wang Chung. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" just did them in. The rest of their stuff is brilliant.

In the 90's there was a band called "Self" that had a debut album of some incredible songs (all I can think of right now is "Cannon" and "So Low". Never heard of them again after that album. UPDATE: Hey cool... found their site: www.mattmahaffey.com/

"Talk, Talk", their one big hit, wasn't even their best song. And that's the only one I've heard. I never knew all the backstory. Interesting. Marshal Crenshaw and Richard Thompson both deserve wider audiences. And Warren Zevon.

Sorry to keep bringing these guys up, but this thread is perfect for King's X, The Jayhawks and Dada.
Also, I've always had a thing for Hothouse Flowers, but they never really took off.
And I'm with Phantom on Warren Zevon.
