thanks for resurrecting the thread. Some of what I've been listening to lately: 1. Koko Taylor. Wang Dang Doodle. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxCa16-nxtM Her cover of the Willie Dixon song really, really makes me want to go that party and talk to Abyssinia Ned and fast-talking Frannie. 2. Son House. John the Revelator. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGBoP70A7Q0 I'm an atheist, and I yet am moved by this religious a capella performance. 3. Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. almost anything by this duo, but I'll go with Born With the Blues: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6C61sxbjII4. Taj Mahal. Cakewalk into Town. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBGbrFlWwsE. 5. Scott Johnson. Mom, Dad, from the movie Patty Hearst. part of it at www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTPlIMUOPUo Johnson takes spoken words, extracts melody, then orchestrates them, here to haunting effect. 6. Thin White Rope. Wire Animals. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMbEgE5ySmA Not my favorite of their songs, but it's on youtube and is representative of this "criminally ignored" (fanwebsite quote) band. 7. Martin Simpson's cover of Dylan's Boots of Spanish Leather. Great guitar work. 8. Dr. John I Walk on Guided Splinters. From liner notes for the re-release: "The blend of druggy deep blues, incantational background vocals, exotic mandolin and banjo trills, ritualistic percussion, interjections of free jazz, and Dr. John’s own seductive-yet-menacing growl was like a psychedelic voodoo ceremony invading your living room." There you have it. 9. Keb' Mo'. Whole Nutha Thang. IF you don't own his album, Suitcase, why are you torturing yourself with the lack? 10. Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto. In the Basement. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSj-KEWw6A0 Hey, doesn't this remind you a bit of the Little Richard song from Catlina Caper?
