Any recommendations for someone wanting to start listening to him? Did you miss trumpysmagicsnout's post above? Well, I was hoping for something a little more simple and easier to handle than over a half-dozen recommendations. Like I said, I'm just looking for a starter album or two. Trumpy, I'd really like something gritty and simplistic, if such work exists. I really don't know much about him, so I'm just guessing and hoping that he has some material like that. All I've heard is "Little Drop of Poison" on the Shrek 2 soundtrack.

Then I recommend starting with his early stuff. There's a best of volumes 1 and 2 that has some wonderful stuff on it, including "Ice Cream Man" which may really make you wonder. ("if you see me comin' and you got no change, don't worry, darlin', it can be arranged. I'm the ice cream man baby, i'll be good to you.") He was originally on the Bizarre label, I believe.

something i forgot to mention Hugh, there's quite a few best ofs out. Beautiful Maladies covers 83 - 93, Used Songs 73 - 80. This is because of a change in record labels. He's on another one now. Orphans covers pretty much every style he's ever done but it's really a rarities collection and 3cds (Little Drop Of Poison's on that). I rattled my brain and realised that the album you may wish to start with is Heartattack and Vine. Musically it's one of his most straight forward but comes in 1980 so his voice his become gruff and the lyrics are getting close to the stuff he covers on the later 80's stuff. there's some ballads and some rockers on there so i'd imagine it's a good place to begin. Everything afterwards is experimental whereas everything before is a bit more straight forward. If you have to get 3 start with Heartattack then get Rain Dogs and The Heart Of Saturday Night. It'll give you a broad intro to his music.

Thanks, Trumpy. I'll look into it over the next couple of days.

I'm resurrecting this thread because in the interviening time (partially inspired by this thread) I've started heavily watching Tom Waits on Youtube (some incredible performaces, they need to get his concert movie, Big Time, on DVD) and renting the hell out of some of his albums from my public library (Closing Time, Heart of Saturday Night, Bone Machine, Mule Variations, and Real Gone).
...and just a few hours ago I bought Franks Wild Years and am listening to it right now. The man must be the coolest person on the planet!
