I don't think this has been asked yet, but can we have a sticky thread on the music board called "song help"?
We have movie help and whatnot in the movie thread. I thought such a thread like this would be great to help ppl who have an unknown song in their head and want to see if anyone can identify a song by the lyrics and whatnot.
What do you think sirs?

Great idea!
I say lets go with it unless anyone has any serious objections.

Great!! I'll start. There is a song that I do not know ANYTHING about. I only heard it two times, once in its entirety and once they reference it in MST3k. It's from the 60's I believe , as it has that British Invasion sound to it. The lyrics include such phrases as "Oooh you're a holiday." and "throwing stones...throwing stones." Any help?

It's an old Bee Gees song called "Holiday." (I kinda like their pre-disco stuff) Ooh you're a holiday , such a holiday Ooh you're a holiday , such a holiday Its something I thinks worthwhile If the puppet makes you smile If not then you're throwing stones Throwing stones, throwing stones Ooh it's a funny game Don't believe that it's all the same Cant think what Ive just said Put the soft pillow on my head Millions of eyes can see Yet why am I so blind When the someone else is me Its unkind, it's unkind De de de de de de de de de de de de de De de de de de de de de de de de de de Yet millions of eyes can see Yet why am I so blind When the someone else is me Its unkind, it's unkind Ooh you're a holiday , every day , such a holiday Now it's my turn to say , and I say you're a holiday Its something I thinks worthwhile If the puppet makes you smile If now then you're throwing stones Throwing stones , throwing stones De de de de de de de de de de de de de de

Mysty, check out the early Bee Gees (PRE Saturday Night Fever).
Odessa is incredible. (They took the project to Sir George Martin, but he had his hands full at the time with the fab four doing Sgt. Pepper's. He was VERY interested in it, however.)
Also, Mr. Natural has always been one of my favorite BeeGees album.
And even though you may loathe Knights on Broadway and Jive Talkin', there's a lot of beautiful songs on Main Course.

I have a casette from early 2000 of songs I taped off my local college station. They were all taped during the hours of the day when the station was using one of those automated programs. In other words, there was no DJ and hence no way to know the name of any song or artist.
I may need help with a few songs I have. Many I've been able to find by googling a section of lyrics, but some are still giving me trouble.
The first one I'd like to know about is, I suspect, titled "Telegram", although I cannot find a listing for it on the internet. It's got a kind of country hue to it with a tumbling piano and violin. The lyrics begin (roughly!):
Outside a wind-blown apron hangs from a spool of twine just like the way you left it that day I couldn't change your mind and how quick young lovers will stumble after spinning like a hurricane we crashed into land and I expected something you bet my life I am telegram... telegram... telegram...
I'm guessing the song dates from 1999. What say you?

Ok, this is a bit vague, but...
Lately, whenever I'm in a public place, I hear this weird, annoying song on the radio.
Its set to a galloping dance beat, and I can never make out the lyrics...except for a constant chorus of "WHOOOO-OOO!! WHOOOO-OOO-OOO-OOOO!". I'm guessing its some current fly-by-night hit song, but who the hell knows...
Any ideas??

Klickitat, thank you very much for your answer. I'll have a few more from that era.
Gesture Professor, this is just a shot in the dark but could it be "The Sweet Escape" by Gwen Stefani? It's a fairly recent song and I've noticed that its "woo-hoo, woo-hoo" part is very popular during the lulls in sporting events.

Working at a pharmacy with a radio station playing "light rock hits from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and now" I think that song might be "Escape" (although that may not be the title) by Gwen Stefani. It says something dumb like: "If I could escape blah blah blah something something my own word Together Perfectly together And tell me boy Now wouldn't that be sweet" Then the dude that does the rap part of the song proceeds to do the "WOOOOOO-OOOOOO A WHEEE-OOOOOO" part about a kabillion times. But at least that's all I can come up with.

I checked with Allmusic, then downloaded the song off Ruckus, and it is indeed "Sweet Escape" by (yeccch!) Gwen Stefani.
Thanks a bunch for the help....now I need a nice helping of Procol Harum to exorcise that horrific dung heap of a song out of my head.

I like Gwen Stefani's "Wind it Up" but I listened to the 15 second bit of Sweet Escape on amazon.com and it sounds like crap.
