Yeah I don't remember where the "Grung" thing came from. It wasn't local and it wasn't a clear definition. It was just the music scene around these parts.
And so many great bands that never made much of an impact on the rest of the world but were important locally...
I remember the sad story of the Gits, the shock when Mia was murdered (I've heard they finally got the guy who did it) and the band who never made it big but was always a Seattle mainstay, the Fastbacks!

i came across a version of ave maria chris cornell did for one of those very special christmas compilation cds a few years back and i was utterly blown away by it. it seems he can make his voice just do anything he wants it to. it's so distinct.

Sorry to revive this old topic, but I love "grunge". Though I hate to use the word, because grunge is what MTV tried to market. Mother Love Bone sounds nothing like Nirvana who sounds nothing like the Screaming Trees. It was a broad music scene. I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan. I own countless bootlegs and most of the studio albums. My guitar playing is very influenced by alternative rock in general. Unfortunately we live in a time where whiney boy pop music rules the air. But so did the 80's. And then alternative rock came and blew them F away. Hence why I feel real rock is on the horizon again

Grunge was just another buzzword that major labels tried to create to exploit the talent of bands that were hitting it big, much like the "alternative" label. It always cracks me up to hear the word "grunge" used to describe music, because my mom would always call the music I listened to "grunge". I kept trying to tell her it was heavy metal, but she just didn't understand.
Soundgarden was closer to a metal band, akin to Black Sabbath. They were pretty boring overall, though.
Alice In Chains was definitely a metal band, and the best of the bunch.
Nirvana was a punk band, whom I hated at the time but grew to like after Kurt's death. They were completely exploited by Geffen and MTV, and I loved Kurt's honesty about it all.
Pearl Jam? pfft. I don't see how anyone could like them. Sooooo boring.

Whatever it's called it's not very good. Nirvana are one of the most overrated bands ever.

As someone who's been involved in the punk rock scene for a long time, I can't say I agree here. Just because Kurt Cobain listened to a lot of punk bands and Dave Grohl was in one, doesn't make them a punk band. Nirvana are one of the most overrated bands ever. This I agree with.

I agree w/ Mannix here. Nirvana is NOT punk. (the year punk broke!! hhahahaahaa) although i do enjoy them...but they were overrated. some lyrics are just horrible...especially off of In Utero and even Incesticide...Bleach was a great album...someone mentioned Sub Pop earlier and there was a v/a Sub Pop record i owned a million years ago...there was a guy Steven something or other...he did spoken word...if i remember he looked kinda like a lanky buddy holly...i'd like to figure out who he was and listen to it again. I remember really likin what was on that particular cd....hmmmm.. and i don't think Soundgarden is anything like Sabbath...i can't stomach Soundgarden at all. they're torture on the ears. Pearl Jam...i dont like...but i respect. the whole ticketmaster thing and stopping the mTV b*s..that's awesome...just don't care for the sound. i did like the cover of "Crazy Mary" though. that's a good song. Alice in Chains is the best of bunch...IMO. Screamin Trees and Mudhoney..Mother Love Bone..yuk. i don't like any of them. After the first few hitmakers popped out of area...they'd push anyone from there in hopes of selling some records... ehhh. Give em the Boot!

Nirvana were miserable pop rock. Or some other description similar. Some good stuff but not great and I still can't work out what the fascination is beyond Cobain and the unfortunate incident with the shotgun.

maybe i shouldn't have used the term "grunge" to start this thread, but that term never bothered me before. grunge - alternative - garage bands - it had to be called something, i guess. maggs, i loved mother love bone too. great band. i was watching some kind of countdown on vh1 recently - best music in the 90's, or something like that, and it was said that nirvana was our generation's beatles. i had nothing against nirvana, they were not my favorite band, but they were all right. but that comment about them being like the beatles rattled me. not even close. i'll listen to the foo fighters before nirvana any day.

When Bart and Lisa discover Marge’s diploma from Springfield University, Marge reveals that she had attended the university back when she and Homer had first started dating. I love Nirvana, and am currently collecting all their works. "Heart-Shaped Box", "Rape Me", "Dive", "Scoff" and "Lithium" are some of my favorite songs. That said, they're the only grunge band I really care for.
