I thought it was that your artificial hip won't allow for any more hopping... No, more likely your artificial reasoning is faulty. No, that's my artificial sweetener. It's carcinogenic.

Kind of moving this thread into this calendar year...
I've been listening to the Vampire Weekend record for about a month now and I'm pretty impressed. It's not going to change the world or anything, but it's fresh and fun.

What the young people here need to realize is that this board is encrusted with an unusually thick layer of Old Fart. As such, you may have a hard time selling them on the charms of The Clap Your Hands Say Arcade Fire Decemberists, or whatever. Anyway, I don't really care who will define this decade, or who will be remembered. Honestly, I could never judge that, nor do I want to. I do think this decade has been a good one for music. Of course, the mainstream/pop stuff is largely trash, but I think that's often the case for most decades. I don't listen to the radio. My favorites are still artists like Wilco, Cat Power, and eels, as well as the classics, like David Byrne, Springsteen, and Paul Simon. Also, Pierre? You lose many, many points for comparing ELO to Nickelback. Jeff Lynne is a god, Nickelback is the devil. Okay? Okay. You do, however, regain those points by speaking kindly of Queens of the Stone Age. They're the best currently-active rock'n'roll band out there, period. Their music makes me want to get drunk, smoke, and start a bar fight. In a good way.

A friend recently said that he would describe all of the mainstream rock & roll in the '00s as either "Whiny Rock" or "Sissy Rock".
The more I think about that, the more I agree. That's not to say there aren't decent bands in both categories. Just that there's something either whiny or sissy about almost all of them.
All the more reason that I'm glad straightforward rock & roll bands like The Black Crowes and the Foo Fighters are still recording and touring.

It saddens me that mainstream rock radio has devolved into a mire of crap, like Nickelback, Staind, My Chemical Romance, and Panic At The Disco -- ugh, there is literally a foul taste in my mouth just from thinking about them. Such disgusting, unimaginative, overly pretentious bullshat.
If anyone here likes those bands then, well, good for you, but I just can't stomach it.

While I share your overall sentiment, I would add a personal anecdote. MightyJack got me to check into My Chemical Romance. And while I would certainly put them into the "whiny rock" category, I wouldn't say they're unimaginative. Aside from a complete lift of "Achy Breaky Heart" (on "Teenagers"), their Black Parade album is quite complex and creative.

It saddens me that mainstream rock radio has devolved into a mire of crap, I thought it started doing that in the '80s. Yes, but the current mire of crap is much worse than it was, back then. I can actually listen to a lot of '80s crap and enjoy it for all the wrong reasons. I could listen to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" forever. I'd go mad, but I'd go mad with a smile on my face. Mr. Atari, to each his own. I wouldn't so much call MCR's work "creative," as "an aural abortion." Sorry. I have no kind words to say about them and their ilk.

I forgot all about this thread!
I apologize for the ELO bash. I'm not a fan... all I know is that Nickelback is one of the worst bands in the world.
