Is anyone around here familiar with classical ragtime music? For my money, it’s essentially the best contribution the U.S. has made to music, but sadly, it really doesn’t get much attention anymore from most folks.
Ragtime is often thought of as the catchy and clichéd music played on a tinny piano, and it can certainly be that. However, at its best, classical ragtime is quite different from this, approaching levels of classical piano music, and this is what I appreciate it for. Although it follows a fairly rigid structure, the complexities and variations let many of the better pieces hold their own against any classical style of piano music. I really think this type of music deserves better than the typical view of a hackneyed, old-timey piece it gets when it’s recognized at all.
If there’s one thing in life that I’ve found a unique talent for, it’s interpreting and playing this type of music, but I have yet to find a significant audience for it. Hardly anyone under the age of ~40 seems to enjoy it, with a distinct subset recalling the music from the film The Sting, which used quite a few compositions by Scott Joplin in its soundtrack. So, I’m really just curious if anyone at all around here is at all familiar with this or listens to it at all.

Joplin's "Pine Apple Rag" is actually my favorite Joplin piece.
