Are there any songs that you love the opening lyrics to? I'm always singing: The Summer wind -- came blowin' in -- from across the sea It's just such a cool opening.
The other one that comes to mind for me is the opening to Neil Young's song Helpless. Lyrically I guess it's pretty meaningless, but the way he sings: There is a town -- in North Ontario... is so evocative! It's been popping into my head randomly for over a decade.
Any opening lyrics you fixate on?

When I saw this thread, the first thing that popped into my head was the opening of Nick Cave's epic murder ballad, "O'Malley's Bar":
I am tall and I am thin Of an enviable height And I've been known to be quite handsome In a certain angle and a certain light
That always makes me smile, especially because later in the song he calls back to it with the line:
The thunder from my steely fist Made all the glasses jangle When I shot him I was so handsome It was the light, it was the angle
:-)

This opening line always crack me up:
"Today is you birthday, we are going to kill you." --Bad Birthday by Servotron
And also, I really like this:
"Catholic girls are on the beach in orthopedic shoes. See 'em run in the sun, lamb of God on their tongues. I thought of you." --Green Meat Stew by Alice Donut

"Day after day I'm more confused, yet I look for the light through the pouring rain" Dobie Gray's "Drift Away". One of my all time favorite songs about the healing power of music.

Broad incision sits across the evening The victim to our fathers lost war The restless children sit and mourn the graves Of those they've never seen before
or
We're now up here alone Terror on the intercom Can someone save us?

"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale..." Nice. I was going to post, "Here we come, walking down the street," but yours is better.

A few favorites:
"I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving/England is mine--and it owes me a living." "Still Ill" by The Smiths. Typically hilarious lyrics by Morrissey.
"I wander lonely streets behind where the old Thames does flow." "History" by The Verve. A suitably somber mood is instantly created for a great breakup song.

Oh, I love that line from the Smiths song! Moz did so many great ones, including the opening of "Bigmouth Strikes Again": "Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to mash every tooth in your head..." And also "The Queen Is Dead": "Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes Hemmed in like a boar between arches Her Very Lowness with her head in a sling I'm truly sorry, but it sounds like a wonderful thing..."

Some I love are Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath" In the shuffling madness Of the locomotive breath, Runs the all-time loser, Headlong to his death. He feels the piston scraping -- Steam breaking on his brow -- Old Charlie stole the handle and The train won't stop going -- It make one think when Old Charlie is of course Charles Darwin.
Rush "Subdivisions" Sprawling on the fringes of the city In geometric order An insulated border In between the bright lights And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided Opinions all provided The future pre-decided Detached and subdivided In the mass production zone Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone
I always loved this song may have something to do with feeling like an outside sometimes.
