I need a short Film Crew history. Was this the thing they did on Showtime for awhile? And why will there be no more releases? RiffTrax? Yes, I believe they were "The Film Crew" when they were on Showtime. In this case, we're more referring to their recent four DVD releases, which were actually recorded around four years ago. They've sold well, but it's hard to say whether they'll return to it or not, given that they're so involved with Rifftrax. Honestly, though, I don't think we'll know about any future Film Crew releases until they've already filmed them. I still have hope for it.

Okay, so then these are not the shows they did back on Showtime but things recorded and not aired, correct?

Okay, so then these are not the shows they did back on Showtime but things recorded and not aired, correct? For Showtime they did a bunch of little movie intro clips. mst3ktemple recorded almost all of them and I transferred them to dvd. So I have a compilation of around forty or fifty clips, as I recall. They range from maybe 15-20 seconds to a couple minutes each.

The Film Crew DVDs are full-length movies riffed MST-style, only without silhouettes. The general consensus is that the DVDs are pretty darn good. You can find them at just about any online DVD store (Amazon, Deep Discount, etc.) and I'd recommend checking them out.

The Premise of "The Film Crew" DVDs is that the gang work for "Bob Honcho", head of a movie studio. Bob picks older movies that have "Been neglected a commentary track. So it's up to Mike and "Crew" to add one.
Each "Episode" of The Film Crew plays out ALOT like MST3k. There's the opening Set-up/introduction/light sketch/opening banter with the person imposing the bad movie. Halfway through, they "Break for Lunch" (Another quick sketch, often having something to do with the movie) and then the wrap up and exit sketch. Roll Credits.
Also if you buy the DVDs, there's often a small little goodie as well. Kinda like the free toy in the box of Cereal. If I remember correctly, "Hollywood After Dark" comes with a Film Crew Iron-on Patch. "Giant of Marathon" comes with a Static Cling. One of the other two come with a Vinal Sticker as well.

I've checked out the clips online from the DVDs and I know the premise behind them I just didn't know if this was something they did on tv or straight to DVD. I plan to buy a couple at least.

Skip "Hollywood After Dark". While still funny from time to time, it's the weakest installment by far.

Gosh. I dunno. Rue McClanahan. Actually the outer space one is the one I want the most. Because I have that movie unriffed and when I first saw it knew just how badly it needed to be.

I think it would be great if the Film Crew and Cinematic Titanic both did the same flick. I'd love to see what each came up with. I really don't think we will be seeing any more Film Crew releases. I hope I'm wrong. Probably we won't see either. I think the Film Crew was an experiment that never got off the ground and we were lucky they didn't pull a Jim Mallon and leave them to rot unreleased and in obscurity forever once Rifftrax got off the ground. I don't see any collaborative projects between the two companies in the near future. Once both companies get established and secure it would be nice if, as in the old Hollywood Studio System days, people were "loaned" out. I think it is possible one day to see Trace doing a Rifftrax and Kevin helping out at Cinematic Titanic.

I think alot of us fans are still holding out thin veils of hope that we can get Joel and Mike to sit down next to each other and work on a flick together. That would be friggin' MAGIC.

As epic as it would be, I imagine Mike and Joel's styles would clash pretty strongly at this point. That's assuming Joel is pretty much where he left off in MST3k. I'd certainly watch it, but I'd be a bit surprised if they had as good of a chemistry as J&TB or M&TB (or the bots' respective actors).

Yeah, as the styles have diverged and Mike came into his own, especially in the Sci-Fi years and present projects, you notice a lot more comments reflecting active dislike for the movie. Like in Casino Royale, they're dissing the opening fight scene, and yeah it's ridiculous but they're unwilling to suspend disbelief and just have fun with it. It's all, No one can do that and live. This is unbelievable and therefore stupid. Whereas Joel was always much gentler. Sure he too could recognize absurdity but he wanted to laugh at it and have fun with it. Good example, Giant Gila Monster where we all learned about blocking and how not to do it. "Come on, get your knee up boy!" Actually, I blame Bill for the angry humor. He brought a lot of that in with him. Could Mike and Joel work together in the theater? At this point, it wouldn't seem likely.
