So with the Wired article they confirm that EZTakes.com is the vendor for the DVDs.
Before you can download the movies you have to install their download manager. I just tried it with their samples and it is not bad. The default directory is in you my video folder (xp) and it looks like it just downloads standard video_ts folders which is good as that is the standard structure of DVDs. I have a pretty good cable connection. The test DVD was on 50mb and I downloaded it in about 30 seconds. If i can maintain that kind of speed I should be able to get a full disc in about an hour.
I can't wait until Monday!!

After the first day I'm sure the site will have no problems distributing the movie, but I'm wondering what will happen in the first few hours of release with perhaps tons of MSTies downloading DVD-sized files from them all at once.
I want to be one of those early adopters, but as with everything internet, server load for something popular may slow to a crawl initially.

hmmm, well, no way I can download it, not with our PC. I'll wait for the DVD, I guess.

Uh oh. I noticed this on eztakes.com:
"If you'd rather get DVDs shipped, we can do that from our sister site, DVD Wagon."
I think this might be how someone would go about getting CT on DVD instead of downloading it. Nothing wrong with that except that you're just getting a burned DVD, not a professionally produced DVD with packaging.
But, if you read around the rest of the site, it sounds like they have artwork available for download for do-it-yourself cases, which I guess is better than nothing. I don't know if I'll go to all that trouble. There's also mention of a To-Go option for use on Ipods and Zunes.
EDIT: Or, I guess I could have just read the Wired article which pretty much confirms that packaging will be a do-it-yourself type affair.

I tried out EZTakes.com, also. Workes pretty good, and I have a 4 yr old computer running Windows 2K.
Looks like prices range from $0 to $20, but it looks like most are between $8-$15, which is my guess for the CT DVDs.

Damn. Yet another complicated procedure for getting MST-related stuff. Yeah, I know, it's not complicated for you all. But I do feel increasingly excluded from these things, like RiffTrax and now CinTi. Oh, well. Enjoy, you techno-elite.

More from DVD Wagon: We make our DVDs on-demand (i.e. as soon as you place an order). The media we use are DVD-R discs, which will play on just about any DVD player (see our Frequently Asked Questions for more information). We will also print label art work right on the DVD surface. We will then mail the DVD to you in a standard DVD mailer. Because our mailers are simple and inexpensive, we can keep our costs and prices as low as possible. === I pretty much do this with the DAP DVDs (swapping them out with official Rhino boxed sets as they're released, of course), so in my case it's really not a problem at all. I really do like the fact that they do apply a DVD label, though; my Sharpie's almost out of ink and I'm way too lazy to go out and get another.

If you don't have a burner one can be had for less than $30. With the EZ Takes you have to download and install their software and you can burn the disc right from the software with a click of one button. Burning DVDs is really, really easy.

It's about 6 years old, but it's gotten so jacked up the last few years. As of now, memory is a problem, and some other things that are just weird. We've got to replace the whole tower, because it just makes more sense with what they want us to pay for fixing our old one. It may be soon, but I'll probably end up just ordering a copy of CT.

Hmm, EZTakes only accept Credit cards Thats a shame. Non-US debit cards won't work then. No Paypal option? Actually - are we sure these are going to be available outside the US? Can't find anything to clarify that UK / Europe users will be able to download. Will try later on other PC. C.

I think I'm going to have to just buy the DVD. I really don't want to fight with all the other MSTies for bandwidth in the rush to download the First episode.

Man I really wish Rifftrax would offer an option like this for the Legend releases (and whatever other on-demand treats they have up their sleeve). Conor, I know you're reading this

Would rather just use Paypal like Rifftrax though!

Okay. For the scared or wary downloader, here's my information. I hate downloading stuff. I don't even download my computer updates like I should. But, this morning I went to EZtakes to at least give it a try. First, my setup:
I have a HP Pavilion Slimline PC with a burner. About 1.5 gig, and I have DSL internet service.
They have three free movies enabling you to try their service. I selected the middle one (Pipe Dreams, 58.97MB), an animated musical short as I figured it would take the least amount of time. First, I had to download the EZtakes download manager, which basically facilitates the download and makes it available to burn once you have downloaded. Necessary equipment in other words. That took about twenty minutes to download the application. Next up was the movie itself which automatically began downloading once the application was running. That took a full forty minutes to download. I took it out, popped it in my regular DVD player hooked up to my TV and presto, there it was. Very skimpy menu and graphics. Just a lame, cheap looking title and something that said Press Play to Begin or something like that. (I don't have it on at the moment and my memory fails me.) Press Play, and it begins. No hiccups or anything, although the picture quality seemed a little grainy and artifacts were visible especially during fast motions (if you've seen any DAP MSTs you know what I mean). The biggest disappointment for me though, was that for my 1 hr download time investment, I got back three and a half minutes in DVD length. Granted, as I said, twenty minutes were spent downloading the application. But 40 minutes for 3:30 minutes seems pretty long. I can't imagine downloading a feature length film. I'd be interested to see what one of their DVD burns looks like, if it's any better than this.
Anyway, that's my report to you. Hopefully this gives you some good information in determing what you want to do!
