I was watching The Beatniks last night, and seeing a young Joel Robinson made me think how strange it will be to see him perform on this new show, close to 20 years after beginning MST3K. And even with the new show, we will see him and think "It's Joel! Hey Joel, long time no see!"
But will he still be Joel? It's his real name, so Mr. Mallon (who retains the rights to MST3K, right?) can't say boo about it. Frank can still be Frank. But can Joel put on a jumpsuit and no be served with a lawsuit? Can Trace wear a pair of green glasses? Or will the performers have completely new personas and new, original names? Just some things I hadn't thought about until last night...

I'm going to guess that they'll all be playing a character, like part of the time capsule creation team and/or a group of scientists, but that they will all use their real first names.
I was thinking of posting the other day a little game to pass the time waiting for the 1st release-- what if they were all their original MST3K characters, what would the back story be to bring them back together? It would have to be pretty convoluted--Joel escaped in the Dues Ex Machina (sp?) and Larry (Josh) just went missing, but TV's Frank is dead and Clayton (Trace) turned into a star-child and then was killed by Pearl (I think that's how it went). Pearl's around somewhere after having her grant canceled or whatever that was at the end.

That's a good question. I just assumed that they'd all be themselves, much like rifftrax or the Film Crew. They do seem to have more background to their idea than rifftrax or TFC, so maybe they will be playing characters.

I guess I had just sort of assumed they would play themselves too. That’s an interesting line of thought!

Add me to the list of people who just figured they'd be playing themselves. I kind of can't believe that the idea that Joel, Trace, Mary Jo, Frank and Josh may be playing actual characters never occurred to me. D'oh!

I also assumed that they would at least be Joel, Josh, Frank, MJ and Trace.

I think by this point it would only be natural to keep at least their first names. I won't care if they do something different, but it only seems natural now to keep it a little more real.

My second guess is that they will be named Artimus, Horace, Lance, Pariah, and Shep.

Maybe they should let Frank play the Trace character, Joel play 'Frank' , Josh play 'Joel', Mary Jo play 'Josh' and Trace play 'Mary Jo'? No? Just a suggestion.

Pearl's around somewhere after having her grant canceled or whatever that was at the end. Well, keep in mind that it's some 500 years in the future when Pearl informs us that she killed Dr. Forrester, and that she didn't kill him until he had grown up to be roughly the same age as he was the FIRST time he started doing the Experiments. But since it's still the present, and if he's aged normally since becoming a star-baby, he'd be about 11 years old now. "But Robyn, Trace is - " I know, I know! Does he have any kids? That'd be pretty funny if one of his kids played a young version of Dr. F, as his father played an older version of him in Laserblast. Anyway, maybe Dr. F could use his star-child powers to accelerate his growth to more respectable age. And yeah, Frank is dead, but he's also a Soultaker, so maybe he got bored being dead and stole his own soul back? I dunno. XD Also, Mary Jo would have to play two roles - Season 7 Era Pearl and Future Pearl. Think about it. Annnnd I think too much about this stuff. ;D

You know, Larry "went missing" after season one, and then here was this guy Frank, and have you ever seen Larry and Frank in the same room? NO!
