That is pretty sneaky. Do you think RiffTrax did it, or a fan?

Only the owner of a video can add tags, I think. It's not shocking, though. It's smart business to use your competitor's keywords to grab some search traffic.

Unless of course it makes people not like you for being creepy.

Yeah, I saw this too. Smart business really, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

This makes me less hopefull for a friendly relationship between the CT and RT people.

Unless of course it makes people not like you for being creepy. This doesn't exactly make me feel more charitable towards RT, but I think as long as they don't pull more and worse things along this lines, anybody who gives up on RiffTrax because of this was already on the edge of giving up on them. This feels even skeevier than it is because usually it won't work so well. But until CT builds up some content in youtube (which at least looks to be getting ranked on top in searches), the RTs will still show up on page 1. I guess Rifftrax has to use the market dominance while it lasts. I'll admit that I've occasionally attached an mst3k tag to a blog posting that was only tangentially related, or used a "film crew" tag on something about a MK&B Rifftrack, and I've certainly seen fan mstings tagged with mst3k.

RiffTrax has always had "MST3K" tags on their videos, and no one has called that a dirty trick. They're not MST3K, but they're related to it and users searching for MST3K might be interested in their content as well. It's not a low-down tactic to associate yourself with something with which you might share an audience.
When I post my crappy fan-vids to YouTube, I always use the tag "MST3K." Not because I want to fool anyone into thinking my videos ARE MST (I'm not delusional), but rather to help MST3K fans find something they might also like. It would be wrong to use "MST3K" or "Cinematic Titanic" in the title of a video, but tags are a different matter.

I'm not upset by it, it's just the typical thing to do with websites or videos online.

This is different. Rifftrax is a branch off of MST3K. Using it in the tag is fine. Cinematic Titanic is a branch of MST3K but it IS NOT related to Rifftrax. Claiming that a Rifftrax video somehow is related to CT is fruadulant.
MST3K is the original. Anything done in an MST3K style can have it as a tag. Rifftrax is exploiting their competition.

So, they could also put "Britney Spears" in the tags and it would still be "allowed" but it still wouldn't make any sense other than just trying to get attention from people who weren't originally looking for their video.

That's the whole purpose of meta info on the web, to get attention from people who weren't originally looking for your content.

Also: I just noticed that the Rifftrax forum now has a special sub-forum for CT talk. I find that slightly odd. Why make a sub-forum for your competition? Unless that's an example of people trying to keep things friendly.

I'm with Josh on this one. When I post my fan-riffs to YouTube, I've also added "MST3K," and possibly even "Rifftrax." I can't remember. It's only so that people who are looking for one product get exposed to your similar product. I've seen plenty of people who pay attention to CT, but either ignore Rifftrax or have never heard of it. So it makes sense.
Also, I think the Brains are being good-natured about this. If anyone makes it ugly, it will be either the fans or non-Brain Rifftrax/CT employees. People need to learn not to be so protective about their series of choice.
