People may hate me for saying this, but IMO the four FC discs come 100x closer to the MST feel overall, and I just laugh so much more. My second viewing of CT-OS only got 25 minutes into it and it was just painful. You know, I agree with you. In the past two weeks, I re-watched the CT disc, and the past week, I've watched 3 of the 4 FC discs, and I have to agree with your summation. Of course, Mike, (and later Kevin and Bill) had been much more active in riffing movies again before they did the FC stuff, so they already had a running start. I've said this before, but I still believe that The Oozing Skull itself is such a train wreck that it might have been a poor choice for a first outing, for a writing/performing team just getting their 'rifflegs' back. But then, not every MST3K episode was a winner, either. So maybe CT's first one being a little shaky will get that 'out of the way', and the next one will be head and shoulders above the first.

But the Film Crew was done before Rifftrax. I agree with the main point though. Oozing Skull is a little bit of a disappointment. I loved it the first time I watched, but I think that was more because I WANTED to love it. I'm just such a Joel fan. Re-watching it recently, I realized it leaves something to be desired. I'll definitely give it some time, and buy at least the next one.

Well, I tried to give this a second viewing the other day..... but I've got to be honest and say CT-OS seems like a pale simulacrum of MST3K to me. All the riffs sounded like "things they might say" rather than the lively, off-the-cuff feel that MST3K had in its better moments. People may hate me for saying this, but IMO the four FC discs come 100x closer to the MST feel overall, and I just laugh so much more. My second viewing of CT-OS only got 25 minutes into it and it was just painful. I will buy the next installment, of course. Artists should be judged by their best work, and I'm willing to give this time. But I thought this first adventure was really hollow. Love ya' and stuff guys, but I wasn't really diggin' it. That's interesting, because the one FC episode I have "Wild Women of Wongo" seemed less funny than CT-TOS. Maybe just an unfortunate movie choice, in either case. Would you say that WWoW is the best, or worst, of the Film Crew's releases? And to me, the 2nd half of CT-TOS is when things really get going. One thing I did notice last time I watched TOS, is the positioning of the performers. I just want to get Trace a seat. Maybe a tall barstool, with a back, so he can spin around a bit, or something. And the sideviews of MJ and Frank seem un-natural, because they're not looking forward. Maybe a big comfy Barcalounger for MJ, facing forward. She could put the footrest, up, then down. We may just see the top of her head. Maybe Frank could sit on one of those torturous "ergonomic" chairs that are anything but ergonomic (I had one). Say he brought it from home, so he can't say it's not comfortable. He stands up now and then, during slow parts, to take the strain off his back. But he'll never admit that his chair is the thing that is making his back hurt... But the un-naturalness of their current placement is off-putting, to me.

But the un-naturalness of their current placement is off-putting, to me. Me, too. Perhaps they'll make some slight changes as they (hopefully) make more, but who knows. They're probably not allowed to look TOO much like Shadowrama™©®, I would imagine.

But the un-naturalness of their current placement is off-putting, to me. I'm totally with you on Trace standing. Really, it's gotta be uncomfortable for both Trace and Josh to stand for the entire length of the movie. I mean really, who stands in a movie? But truthfully, I just want Joel's head to stop being obstructed by Josh's platform. That's all I ask. Joel's been hiding from us for years, we don't need him hiding anymore!

Beyond the seating and standing arrangements, I just wanted to offer my comments on Cinematic Titanic's second effort, The Wasp Woman. In my personal, non-professional fan opinion, anyone who found The Oozing Skull to be lacking, I feel you'll have a very different, positive take on TWW. The plot was comprehensible, the riffing was hilarious, and, judging by audience reaction, I was not the only one with this opinion.
If the first offering was a matter of shaking off the rust, finding your sea legs and getting through an incomprehensible film, the second go at it will be much more to your liking.

I've watched Skull about 7 times now and it has never failed to make me howl. FC was okay but it doesn't come close to the brilliance of CTs first effort, nor to the feel of MST3K, at least from the Joel era. It's just my style of riffing I gather.
I do look forward to Wasp, I always thought that would be a good fit.

I've seen TOS twice now. I think they did a great job for their first outing. I thought they were just going to riff the movie with no kind of host segments at all. I like the way they did them. I am looking forward to them ripping up Wasp Woman.

To me, the riffing starts kinda uneven, with a great Mod Squad riff by Joel, but about 20 minutes in, it gets funnier. Overall, I love the feeling of the show, it's very relaxed and natural. I like how California has influenced the writing a bit, but it still feels vintage MST3K.
But in comparison, FC and Rifftrax feels a bit sharper, which is to be expected. I can't wait for more CT, i know they'll get better. And to be fair, I like Joel in this more than mike in all but one of the FC releases (Giant of Marathon, though i didn't like the Hercules movies on MST, for some reason had me laughing really hard) though I watch more mike episodes. Overall, a great first effort considering all the changes the new riffers and host segments give to the movie, and i am eager to see how they progress.

Would you say that WWoW is the best, or worst, of the Film Crew's releases? IMO, Wild Women of Wongo is the worst of the FC lot. It tends to drag, and the only times I really laughed were the Bam-Bam jokes. For me, I'd place them: The Giant of Marathon Killers From Space Hollywood After Dark Wild Women of Wongo And I loved Oozing Skull. I admit, when the film began, I felt the riffs came a little too fast and felt somewhat forced. But, once the movie got going, they seemed to settle into a good pace. It also didn't hurt that they chose an Al Adamson film. He's one of my favorites. ;D I will say, the one weak point in both the FC and CT releases are the quality of the skits. Granted the CT crew are at a disadvantage being limited to silhouettes, but, well, that was their choice.

About Doomsday Machine:
DEEP HURTING. EXTREME, HORRIBLE DEEP HURTING.
The movie that is, not the riffing. Riffing=pretty good.
