Jay Leno (a member of the writer's guild) circumvented the strike by claiming union rules allowed him to write material for himself. Possibly the CT crew are using the same loophole.

This isn't TV or Film for a studio, you are allowed to work on your own projects. It's not a total writing ban.

Well I popped it in as soon as I tore it from the envelope.
Overall, I'm very pleased. It made me laugh a lot, it moved fast and it left me wanting more. The theme song is great and the end credits have a very nice font... the time tube lowers from the ceiling at the end for the credits and that was a little weird, that that's its only use as of now.
The riffing was fantastic. It's strange that these people are 20+ my seniors and yet make similar jokes that my friends and I would... maybe I'm just beyond my years, maybe they're just immature. Maybe age isn't quite so much a thang. I dunno. I'm tired.
Anywho, the host segments are very short and for the most part hilarious. There's also little gags throughout the whole thing- for instance, Steven Hawkings comes driving out and says he wants in on the brain transplants. Glorious. Josh/J. Elvis' host part was my favourite- it channelled Pete Townshend.
I'm not much a reviewer, especially after first viewing. But I can say that this is pretty fantastic.

Fun movie - I'm glad they were able to pull it off! Now I hope, hope, hope that this makes a little money for them so they can keep on putting these out! This is totally worth the $20, plus the disk even has nice artwork on it.

Highlights include:
-The visit from Stephen Hawking. -Joel making a reference to The Mod Squad before putting his head in his hands and saying "I'm old." -Josh makes a joke about breaking a mirror to which Joel proclaims, "We're back!" -VERY short host segments which is fine by me. Confession: I always fast-forward the host segments. -Some throwbacks to MST3K riffs including everyone being scared by the credits suddenly flashing on the screen. -Joel calls one of the characters a dick.
It has a very "MST-Season 3" feel to it. Relaxed, but sharp riffing.
My ONLY complaint is the shipping method. I couldn't believe the disc came with no protection at all. Not even a sleeve. I don't even send burned mix-CDs to friends without including a case. Will it increase cost? Yes. But I think we'd all be willing to pay a buck or two more for a proper case.

is there any cover art included on the DVD (like, in a folder called, "covers")? I didn't see any, just Audio and Video folders, like a ripped DVD.

The DVD went directly from my mailbox to the DVD player. Fun stuff. As RAD said I was a little concerned that 5 riffers would be too much, but the riffing was well paced and no one stepped on each others toes. Mastershake mentions what I think is the best line, when J. Elvis responds to "Does he want to destroy Amir?" Josh: "That's seven years bad luck." Also, you gotta love the Zippy headgear on the "monster." The spirit gum budget must have been pretty low.

Will it increase cost? Yes. But I think we'd all be willing to pay a buck or two more for a proper case. The shipping thing kind of bugged me too, especially when I got the envelope and it read (very, very clearly) 58 Cents. Anyway, my opinions: The Good stuff: The Riffing here is top notch. Everyone seems to have bounced back to riffing with surprising ease. I can't wait to see where it goes from here. I also really liked a few of the host segments. The Bad stuff: I miss the puppets. There, I said it. some of the actions from the group come off as a little campy from time to time. That never happened with the bots. That said, it's better than the alternative no-figures like Rifftrax or Film Crew. Also, I was a little confused as to just what the sam scratch the premise of the series was. I'm just going to assume now there isn't one, but it confused me nonetheless. I'm also confused by the inclusion of Stephen Hawking. That was kinda strange. All that having been said, I loved it. A few things felt sort of awkward and clunky right now, but I'm sure they'll all be smoothed out as the series progresses. Gentlemen, I believe we have the return of MST3K... sorta.

A note on the shipping - NetFlix does the same thing, and I've never had a problem.
Who cares why Stephen Hawking rolled by and riffed a couple of times - it was Stephen flapjacksing Hawking! ;D
It's a no frills disc - chapters and the movie, that's it. I think they made an excellent choice for the first flick, because it's so bad, it's almost good. I didn't find it gory at all, because the "blood" was obviously primary red paint. But those who aren't used to watching real horror movies might wince...but it really does look like red paint. Because it is.
As for the content and performance, I enjoyed it. I found it consistently funny, some lulls, and couple back-to-back zingers. Two immediate favs off the top of my head are "They ransacked my apartment!" (in the trailer, I think), "Stiffy pop!" and well...I forget. I can't remember riffs unless I write them down. heh
Anyway, if this is a lame review, I'm sorry. I don't do them up like VH or MonsterX. I'm just giving my impression. It entertained me, and I feel I got my money's worth. Cheers!

Well, I've watched it...
It really was amazing. The riffing was spot on, and the host segments, though short, were brilliant. I've never been a fan of Josh, but with his brilliant song and guitar smash host segment, I have a feeling he's endeared himself to me permanently. There were some blank spots in the riffing that could have been filled in a bit more, but I figure they'll tighten it up more once they get into a groove with this.
I only panicked a little bit in the beginning, because I've been so trained to follow Mike/Joel and the Bots on the lower right part of the screen, it took a minute or two to adjust to the new shadowrama. I couldn't follow the movie and pay attention to the shadows at the same time, so I couldn't tune in on the funny. But like I said, once I readjusted, I was just peachy!
Only other thing. Definitely needs more premise. Seeing the Time Tube come down at the end was cool, but if you were a person who was watching this and hadn't been following the news on the project, you wouldn't know what the heck that was!
But really, to those who have been on the fence about buying the DVD(all three of you), do it. You won't be disappointed.

I'd also like to add they should maybe next time take a minute or so to just settle into the movie. For some reason rushing into it like they did was strangely distracting for me.
Really though I just can't wait for the next one. I. Cannot. Wait.

Yeah, I'd love for them to invent some back-story. They could mention a little bit in each episode.

Even if they didn't want to create a back story it would be really cool to have an intro by the whole group on screen. Just a couple minutes explaining a little about why they picked the movie, a favorite star to watch for, etc., and if Josh would end each intro by saying "Enjoy!" it would be fan-flipping-tastic.

Got it in the mail today, and a couple hours later the boyfriend and I watched it. Laughed ourselves silly quite a bit, so I'd say it was a success! Took a bit of getting used to the new format and five people and so on, and there were one or two quiet/eh moments, but overall I thought it was excellent. Joel's "The Mod Squad! ....Ohhh, I'm old." and Josh's guitar smash were two of my favorites as well. Also Mary Jo's "Who lets their kid play in a ravine??" *show of hands* "Oh."

I really enjoyed it. I was worried that things would be too "busy" with 5 riffers, but they worked beautifully together. The host segments were fun, and I must also give a thumbs up to Josh's guitar smash. I didn't see that one coming, and it made me laugh quite a bit. The riffing was very good. A standout was the whole crew singing "100 bottles of blood on the wall" during a driving scene. I need to watch it again in order to pick out a few more favorites.
Bottom line: this is a very good debut, and I am looking forward to many, many more. Well done, CT!
