I actually liked the Film Crew releases a little better than CT's first outing. But I'm on board for CT as long as it keeps going. Ditto on both points. I didn't really miss shadowrama at all and I thought their host segmest were fun and although the premise was kinda weak, it was actually about perfect--it's a down-to-earth (literally) updated version of the MST3K premise. And I thought their skits were more hit than miss. I'm glad they're doing well with Rifftrax, but I REALLY, REALLY would go for more Film Crew releases.

There's no prize listed next to next week's. Do you mean yours next month? Thanks for noticing that, Kyrie! I had it in my head that my turn to host the contest was next week! I would've looked pretty stupid, posting my contest next Monday. But then again, Bix Dugan got renamed Big Stupid for reason! And I'm 6'3" tall, so the Big part applies, too...

I loved the skits in TFC, and I felt that the movie riffing was a little more solid and on the ball than CT. That said, this is the very first CT release, and as many have noted most of these people have been out of the riffing game a long time. I'm sure that the riffing will pick up. :-) And I do really really like the shadowrama for CT. A lot.

And when it comes to writing the funny, nobody outdoes Mike. Thank you Callipygias, for being the first one I've seen to point this out. Many diehard Joel fans seem to forget that Mike was the head writer through the entire run of MST, including the golden age of Joel. Cinematic Titanic was the first MST-related riffing endeavor to not have his writing talents, and I think it showed.

How could anyone forget something like that when we have nice folks like you to constantly remind us. Because all Joel fans believe that Joel wrote all of his own material on MST, as well as most of everyone else's. Lisa

Cinematic Titanic was the first MST-related riffing endeavor to not have his writing talents The comparison that keeps coming to my mind is the ENORMOUS shoes Mike had to fill when Joel left. The shoe is off the other foot now (kill me) and the CT crew have Mike's equally enormous head-writer shoes to fill. I'm sure they're as up to it as he was though, and #001 was an awful good start, I thought. And who knows, maybe writing for five characters will be even more inspiring that writing for three.

See the Film Crew stuff just wasn't very funny to me. Oh it had its laughs, but out of all these projects that has been the weakest.
After watching this again I am struck by the balance. Yes you get a fart joke but fart jokes have been a staple since MST, and in small quantities they are funny.
But they also throw in a political joke and then a pun and then an observation quip, it was all very balanced and smooth and didn't lean heavily one way or the other as I feel Rifftrax and TFC has.
Also, being old, as I mentioned in my review, Joel's "Mod Squad" bit slayed me. I think I love Joel so much because he's in my head. I'm on the same wave length as he and maybe that's what it all comes down to when we find one of these riff projects... they click, aside from our sense of humor, because they speak to us on some personal level.
Don't get me wrong, Mike is GREAT, I love Mike with all my heart and funny bone.... But Joel's my kindred spirit.

How could anyone forget something like that when we have nice folks like you to constantly remind us. Because all Joel fans believe that Joel wrote all of his own material on MST, as well as most of everyone else's. Some do, actually. Many Joel fanatics discredit Mike, when he's always been an integral part of the show's success, since the early seasons. He edited the scripts together and had the final say on what actually made it on-screen. So, credit where credit's due. Personally, I think Joel's always been more of an idea man. The few times I've seen him try to be funny entirely on his own, he's seemed pretty dull. I'm not saying he's talentless, but I just think he, and MST, ultimately benefitted most from the collective team of Brains, not Joel himself. His inventions and creative ideas, however, are usually excellent.

I thought he was a riot on his own.

I just think that when it comes down to Joel sitting down and coming up with humorous commentary, he tends to be a little soft.

We will have to part company on this debate my friend. I don't find anything soft about Joel's comedic genius, as a prop comic or as a commentator. I'm laughing till I hurt at certain riffs that are, I feel, obviously of his construct (They reflect his comedic sensibilties) whether with CT or Star Wait or MST3K. Joel has always made me laugh and laugh big!

I used to never preference Joel or Mike...but their post MST projects are starting to make me realize I'm a Joel guy. I haven't really enjoyed Mike's books, and while I like rifftrax, I am utterly blown away by CT...
it's just kind of funny, I guess with age I've become more in tune with Joel's style and personality...
i still love them both, though.

Many diehard Joel fans seem to forget that Mike was the head writer through the entire run of MST, including the golden age of Joel. I hear this often, especially over on the RiffTrax forum. But, from what I've read (straight from interviews with Mike, although I'm sure he was being at least a little self-depricating and modest), Mike's role as head writer mostly meant he was the guy editing everybodies comments into one script. I never got the impression that he wrote more stuff than anyone else or that his opinion on content held any more weight than anyone else's. Although, I also think the same about Joel. It has always been my opinion that once the show was off the ground and running, say middle of season 1, that all writers got about equal input and weight.
