The Park Bench did a neat interview with Mary Jo, where she talks a bit about Cinematic Titanic and its writing process.

Are Joel, Trace, Frank, Josh, Mary Jo, Mike, Kevin and Bill just the NICEST people ever? I swear, they are always come off as folks you would like to spend a lot of time with and have as your neighbors.

Are Joel, Trace, Frank, Josh, Mary Jo, Mike, Kevin and Bill just the NICEST people ever? I swear, they are always come off as folks you would like to spend a lot of time with and have as your neighbors. I tell ya, at the Expo 2, they really, really were (nearly) all very nice. Talk about friendly! Hanging around for people to talk to them, not even separated from the crowd. Just down there with the rest of us, on the floor. At one point, I'm watching the Panel with Kim Cantrell and Russell Johnson, etc, and I look over to my left and there's Mike, Bridgette, Mary Jo, and Paul ( No others, as I recall - Need to look at the photos - it's been years). I was on the end of the row, and they were leaning against the wall there right beside me. After the panel, they stood were they were and talked, signed autographs and took photos. That day I got to talk briefly with many of the MST3k folks, and they were truly nice as pie! I took a photo with Mike, Mary Jo and Bridgette, each. I bumped into Trace at a coffee shop (well, me and a ton of other people) and even walked along with him to the next event at the Con. When I was talking to Kevin and Trace at a signing event, I told Kevin he was my Fave of the bots. Kevin laughed and acted as if he was giving me the money he owed me for saying that, while getting a funny look from Trace. I then told Trace he had both Crow and Dr F going for him, and that I loved Dr F. I've been holding off on telling this next thing, since I've never been sure if it was just my incorrect interpretation, or a real thing. Jim M was hardly around, and at one point I was off from the crowd, down a hallway by a water fountain, when Jim M came out of a door, just there by me, and I was the only person close. Others were much further up the hall. So, he seems to be ducking-out, and I, standing maybe 10 feet away from him, said, "Jim?" and he turns and looks at me, but keeps walking. I then raise my camera, and he holds his hand up, sort of in front of his face, but it didn't seem to be in a joking "avoid the paparazzi" manner, but more of a Leave Me Alone manner. Anyway, it is, I think, the only photo I have of him from that entire event. OK, Maybe I shouldn't have called him by his first name, but he was truckin' for the door, and I wanted to catch his attention. After calling out to him, he just kept walking, not replying or pausing, or answering back with anything, and that's when I raised my camera, and he raised his hand. It was not a wave. I'll say when I walked up to Mike Nelson and said, "Mike?" He looked at me smiling. I then asked if I could take a photo with him, and he replied with a big, friendly, "Sure!" The same for Mary Jo. For Bridgette, she was being swarmed at the time, but I wanted a photo with her, so I called out, in a high falsetto voice, Nuveena! and she immediately looked up at me, and sort of laughed. She, too was very friendly. Jim clearly was there for a contractual-only type purpose.

Jim clearly was there for a contractual-only type purpose. I don't know. I thought Jim was always extremely crowd-friendly at the events, and genuinely grateful to the fans as a whole. It's just that, like Trace, he never seemed comfortable with the more one-on-one aspect of it all. Sometimes when I'm watching footage from the conventions and such I cringe at some of the fans' behaviour, so I kind of couldn't blame any of the Brains (especially the off-screen ones) for wanting to get to their nice, quiet room.

Sure Don , You may have caught him at an exhausted moment , or it may have been more of "a window" into how things were amongst the Brains at that time. What year was this Expo again ? Was this the point where Trace had announced he was moving on , and Bill was there but not yet proclaimed as the next Crow ? Those may well have been dicey times behind the scenes.

Oh, like what? I haven't seen any of this stuff. Nothing dramatic like the guy who mailed them his molars, but there are always a few people that have to fill every little silence by screaming something at the stage. Once in a while they're actually funny, but even when they weren't the Brains were usually really cool about it, which thrilled the rest of the crowd. --Hey, we can be complete nerds and they won't kick us out!Jim was also very cool about those things, like at the '96 convention he mentioned some random guy who helped in some small way w/MST:The Movie and some guy in the crowd went bananas, and Jim said, something like, "It's good his father could make it."

Was this the point where Trace had announced he was moving on , and Bill was there but not yet proclaimed as the next Crow ? Yes, that was '96; the 2nd Expo. Bill slouched in his chair on stage like the cool kid and got a huge laugh when he claimed his favorite MST ep was Fanny & Alexander, or something like that.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Jo last June in Denver at our Mistie Meet Up and she was so down to earth and approachable even with the scary prospect of meeting fanatic geeked-out fan persons without a podium, table or security to hide behind. She was great and what a classy lady!

Great interview!
I hate to label people by gender, but I have to say I can't think of a female comedy writer I admire more than Mary Jo. If you haven't read her book, you're missing out. Out of all the MST3K writers' work it's my favorite by far.

I'd love to get a hold of her book. A deeply funny woman. Let's hope we hear more from her soon, especially as she's the only one so far to make the great CT/Rifftrax crossover. Not quite as almighty (or possibly as deadly but then who really knows) as the same player having played for both Glasgow Rangers and Celtic but still interesting all the same!

I'd love to get a hold of her book. It's great! Very funny, but also refreshingly honest in her struggles to find work after MST3K, the bad blind dates, etc. Mary Jo's fearless in that she portrays herself as a bit of loser at times--though she certainly isn't!
