Hey all, Did you ever want to catch Joel during a pause in cracking wise on horrible movies and have him give you the low-down on Cinematic Titanic, MST3K (and why he really left the show), and other stuff you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask? Well, Joel comes clean on Slashdot.com and you have the opportunity to get an insight into all of those things that could only come from the guy who started it all! In addition, it's a great way for those of you who have seen the first Cinematic Titanic release (and you know who you are) to post your opinion at Slashdot.com to let the rest of the world know what you think of it. You can find it here: interviews.slashdot.org/interviews/08/01/25/1457218.shtmlRAD

Thanks for the link, RAD. Maybe you should be put in charge of updating the CT website...

Pretty bland interview, except for this:
Really, there's no shortage of bad movies still being made that deserve the MST3K treatment. Did you just get tired of mocking bad movies?
No, I loved working on the show -- I created it. It was the perfect job. I left the show because I was not getting along with my partner in the venture. After the fifth season, he and I were on the verge of a fight that I think would have threatened the survival of the show. I decided to step down, which was a bit of a personal tragedy for me. I created the appearance to the press that I had other plans, but I didn't. It was all to keep the thing alive. On the bright side, it worked-- the show lived on. On the downside, I felt like an important part of my creative life was cut short -- but now I'm working on fixing that, by getting everyone back together in the form of Cinematic Titanic. And I'm glad to mention that everyone's improved at what they were already great at -- movie riffing.

RAD once again proves himself a gentleman and an all-round nice guy. Thank you so much for posting the link! There were a couple of things in it that made me rather sad. However, I got a kick out of Joel's answer to the question about what hobbies he has: "Thanks for asking. My hobby is stage magic. I've been interested in it since I was about eight years old. Ask any magician -- magic can be a richly satisfying hobby." Maybe I liked it so much because it reminded me of how, when our daughters were little, my husband would delight them by pulling a quarter out of their ears. I can picture Joel's little girl(s?) saying, "Do it again, Daddy!" every time he does a trick.

I agree: weird and bland interview except for that one answer quoted by BoB3k. Of course I knew all about the creative differences, but I've never heard that Joel left specifically to save the show, rather than just to get away. He may have just martyred himself.

So without naming a name, Joel finally has come out and said he left MST3K due to problems with Mallon.
I'm not sure why he wouldn't want to give an opinion on Mike's enterprise, but maybe some of the same issues that exist with Mallon and Joel exist there as well.

Jeez, I had completely forgot about the Slashdot interview! Lessie... ...So out of all the questions asked, they pick the blandest ones, most of which could be answered by a simple glance at Wikipedia or Google or just hanging around here...to ask Joel Hodgson, creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000, who rarely does interviews. Way to whizz it down your leg, Slashdot! Sorry, sorry, I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but after the Star Wars interview, this is kind of a let down. ...And then Joel just totally ignores the RiffTrax question!?? What is that? That just seems so catty! Or maybe he was just trying to be polite by avoiding conflict? Or... Meh, he probably did it 'cause he knew it would drive fans like me crazy.

Huh ! "Weird and bland" ? , in a couple of spots , perhaps. But his answer on leaving MST was far more candid then I'd ever yet seen ! Almost more revealing then I'm ready to process . . . sad too.
But how was this interview prepared ? These questions came in from folks who knew where to submit questions for an upcoming interview ? Why didn't we know this ?

Slashdot regularly does these interviews and they don't make a big fuss about it. Unless you catch it on the day that they announce it, you have to know where to look on the site to even be able to tell that they're taking questions for an interview.
And WOW at Joel's comments about why he left the show. Wow.

But also ! This question ? > What do you think about the other efforts led by Mike Nelson like Rifftrax & The Film Crew? Is there a reason that you, Pearl, TV's Frank & Dr. Forester have split from Mike, Brain Guy & Tom Servo? I'm overjoyed that there are multiple efforts but why?
Question Unsurprisingly Left Unanswered.
Maybe it was something about listing them by character names that gave it "too many layers" for Joel to simply answer ? Regardless , I asked this elsewhere . . . when Joel was originally listing the motivations for mounting CT , didn't the successes of Mike and friends factor in ?

Has Joel even ever mentioned Mike by name since leaving MST3K?

Has Joel even ever mentioned Mike by name since leaving MST3K? I know. I'm getting a creepy feeling like when mommy and daddy started sleeping in different rooms. I don't think I want to know any more....

I thought Joel leaving the show due to problems with Jim was common knowledge. I’m sure that it’s been mentioned by other members of the cast in past interviews.

I thought Joel leaving the show due to problems with Jim was common knowledge. I’m sure that it’s been mentioned by other members of the cast in past interviews. It is, but it's always been presented that Joel left directly because of the bad blood, not that he gave up his precious MST because he feared that the bad blood was going to ruin it. That's a tragically different spin in my mind. Plus it makes me want to join the anti-Mallon club for the first time.
