In all fairness to Joel's not acknowledging Mike and all, it actually is QUITE RARE for a former host and a latter host to truly comment on each other. Or if a castmember leaves a show, and a new one surfaces. In interviews they really don't talk about each other. Really none of the "Family Fued" hosts ever acknowledged each other. None of the AFV hosts explain their feeling about one another. Yeah but it's not like Louie Anderson and Richard Dawson worked together for several years.

But Joel does mention a bit about his fellow castmembers continuing without him on the show. It's only the recent stuff, from years after they separated, that he doesn't mention.

Remember the recently referenced 1991 interview? Can't remember the name of the show, I want to say Night after Night, but that may be wrong. It's on the General Discussion page. Remember the guy asked some goofy question along the lines of "What's it like to be orbiting around in space watching bad movies?" and Joel just gave him a "What? I don't know. I'm here, not in space." So I could see him seeing that ridiculous question and just thinking, Duh.

If I may be just a little snarky and sarcastic, Joel did give his opinion of RiffTrax in answer to another question:
Seriously though, I agree with those who don't think we can read too much into his non-answer, especially given the phrasing of the question.

If I might offer a comment: Y'know, it's possible that that answer WAS Joels answer - a gag, a lark, a jape? Like, Ha Ha? The author doesn't interject anywhere else in the article, and the italics were used to denote Joels responses - lack of italics are the authors words, and a comment like that shouldn't be made by an interviewer. Also, To Capitalise Every Word Like That Is Kinda Odd. Also, as it's an interview - wouldn't it just have been easier to swap that question for one with an answer if there wasn't one? Maybe someone could contact the author of the piece and find out before Joel Vs Mike: The Rematch begins! C.

Interesting that he ignored the RiffTrax question. Wonder if Joel feels slighted by Mike using "his" idea. I think there could certainly be some truth to that. Mike has basically made an entire career out of Joel's concept. I think the quality of CT is a bit of a wake-up call to people that presummed Mike was the heart and soul of MST3K. That said, I still think Mike's one of the best comedy writers/performers in the business.

But he gets a credit for writing , or co-writing, that episode . . . so it probably can't be considered a spontaneous answer. But the fact that it's preconceived may be more revealing !

No. I was referring to this topic www.forrestcrow.proboards47.com/index.cgi?board=mstchat&action=display&thread=1199854289. It's now on page 2 of General Chat. If you watch the youtube link, the guy asks him a question, or rather asks Joel Robinson a question, and Joel Hodgson basically answers with a "Hey, you're talking to me, not my character." Though, he's polite about it.

And of course in the same interview jobbies on the idea of doing recent big Hollywood movies, the questions about Robin hood Prince Of Thieves I think, so you could take that as his answer on Rifftrax!

The moment you're describing still sounds more like the Space Ghost bit tho' , as in the Night After Night clip it's more simply a chuckling " I wasn't shot into space". The moment from Space Ghost is almost exactly as you first quoted it . . . and they're both great !

Honestly guys, I dont think the Zapruter film was studied as much as this online interview.
Time to just relax and watch the MST3K, Film Crew, Rifftrax or CT of your choice.

Lookit the wee little puppet man! Seriously, we're just having some fun in this discussion. Or at least, I am. I'm not trying to dig into it too deep, but it's interesting to see what other people are taking from it.

Actually, Joel co-wrote episode 18 Urges, and appeared on ep. 20 $20.01, making him the only guest I can think of who had any sort of creative involvement with the show. But you're right about the spontaneity. Interviews on Space Ghost Coast to Coast were conducted by a staff member, and the script was then written around the interview, with frequent alteration of the questions and re-ordering of the answers. The basic premise of the show is that SG is on the Ghost Planet interviewing people back on Earth via satellite. Joel appears to have just been reacting to that, but in the final product he's also refusing to riff a movie along with SG.

Lookit the wee little puppet man! Take a look at episode 605. You can clearly see Mike's silhouette on the grassy knoll in frame 45982.
