Very shortly after CT was 1st announced and the excitement was reviving the interest of long-time members plus attracting many new ones , I began to wonder what it meant to those newer fans who'd started w/ Sci-Fi and were only just investigating the "Joel era". There's a wide range of familiarity among us all, of course. I keep thinking of Krista (or is it Katie ?) who's said , I believe, that she only discovered the show in July of `07. But she's real big on Trace so that would suggest she's caught up pretty well ! But then , to a lot of members , Josh is like Stuart Sutcliffe with The Beatles in Hamburg . . . way back there before world-wide attention. Like I said , there's a lot of variations in the whole realm of "How much I've seen".
So how many of you guys don't have quite as much of a "They're Back !" perspective on this ? . . . is it more like a new riffing project from some legends you've been meaning to check out more ?

Josh is like Stuart Sutcliffe with The Beatles in Hamburg . . . No, Stu Sutcliffe couldn't even play an instrument, he just hung out on stage and faked it. His girlfriend Astrid however did give the Fab Four their famous Beatle haircuts... Josh is more like Pete Best, the original drummer

I'm more interested in RiffTrax, because Mike Bill and Kevin were there first in this category, and those were the guys I got hooked on MST3K with. I do like Joel and Co. but I don't know if I like them enough to buy CT stuff.

I got into MST3K during it's Sci-Fi run. I'm sure I would have watched it during the CC years if I could have but our local cable provider didn't carry it until the late 90s. Over the years, I've pretty much remained a loyal fan to the Sci-Fi era. The riffs from those episodes are just far funnier to me.
For a very long time I wondered what people even liked about Joel. The episodes I had seen--Unearthly, Sidehackers, Catalina Caper--seemed very dull and I even started to skip over Rhino's Joel releases (which is why I still have no copy of Cave Dwellers and some of the others).
With the passage of time, more genuinely funny Joel episodes have trickled out in the box sets, and I've come around to him. I still think there's no comparison between Seasons 1-4 and Seasons 5-10 in terms of funny movie riffs, but he's okay.
So when I heard Joel, Trace, and Josh were back...well, actually, I was really excited because even though they're not my favorites I still love them. But admittedly I was much more interested in the Film Crew, was very pleased with those releases, and am quite depressed that project looks to be at an end. I'd trade CT for more Film Crew in a heartbeat.
I do plan to keep buying CT releases as long as they come out. Oozing Skull was good enough to guarantee my business. But I'm not among the crowd who are ecstatic right now, viewing CT as the second coming of MST3K and a return to the glory years of when riffing was great. To me Film Crew was a reprisal of the best years--Mike, Kevin, and Bill. The CT cast are just the "other guys." Funny, sure, but not the funniest in the business.

Wow. Just... Wow. But, to each his own...

But I have to admit that I'm a ltittle bit confused with this "Mike Bill and Kevin were there first" comment. And why does this sound more like an intervention? "Mike, Kevin and Bill were there for me when I got hooked on the MST."

Even though I'm pretty old for a fan, like a lot of you I didn't become a regular viewer until the SciFi era. I knew about the show in the early 90's but to get Comedy Central was a $50 a month upgrade to basic cable in my area and I didn't have the money at that time to get the show. Heck I wasn't even a member of the greater MST3K Internet community until the show finally went off the air in 2004. Then I discovered I could get the old shows through trade and purchase and quickly got up to speed on the Joel era.
I think as CT evolves it will create its own fan base separate and distinct from its MST3K roots. Comparisons will probably never go away totally but once the show gets on its feet and hits its stride it will stand alone on its own right.

Jim Mallon: Mean Mr. Mustard? Or depending on who you listen to, Yoko? RAD is Yoko. He probably sings better, though.

Or depending on who you listen to, Yoko? RAD is Yoko. He probably sings better, though. I do NOT want to hear RAD sing: "Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss me now, just one kiss will do"

Or depending on who you listen to, Yoko? RAD is Yoko. He probably sings better, though. Actually Hugh, I'm not sure this analogy holds water. I'm not a Beatles fan, but I believe that Yoko was a destructive and divisive element within the group, whilst I work in the background trying to bring everyone together. But I do agree that I probably sing better than Yoko. But hell, who doesn't? RAD

Ooh ! You Yoko-basher you ! How did this get to be a "Sgt. Servo's Lonely Riff-Club thread" anywho ! Boy , give this bunch one little analogy and off they go. As the "Stoopid The K" ( Murray The K ? ) of this bizarre recasting, I halfheartedly insist on a return to whatever the hell my topic was !! ( I better check )

As someone who "discovered" MST3K later in life, and who was Christened with Sci-Fi era Mike episodes and later delved like an archaeologist to experience the Joel eps, I have to say that CT promises a brilliant potential to this genre. The differences I find between Mike and Joel eps are part of what I love about the series...the ability to adapt to new faces and temperaments, styles and strengths. I would like to hope that CT will continue this broadening - opening a window for us to new experience in poking fun at these cheese-filled relics which so richly deserve it! That is why I support CT...it remains true to the form of ravishing the crap which has "oozed" (sorry, I could not resist) out of some of Hollywood's back-lots.
