I've been listening to a lot of Aimee Mann of late and her song "That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart" is devistating, it's about a woman in love with an addict and she's realizing that there's just more heartache and pain at the end of this path. The opening line... "I drew a picture of you...and saw the face that I knew, covered in shame" Jesus that hits me right in the heart.
Also on her "Lost in Space' CD, the final song "It's Not" is one of the most stunningly beautiful songs I've ever heard. The arrangment really adds to the texture and mood and the lyrics -about feeling stuck, lost and unable to make life work- touch me. The final verse...
So baby kiss me like a drug, like a respirator And let me fall into the dream of the astronaut Where I get lost in space that goes on forever And you make all the rest just an afterthought And I believe it's you who could make it better Though it's not No, it's not
There are a lot of beautiful or powerful songs I could add, but Aimee's my thing right now and I find her work very moving.

First thing that comes to mind is "Given Flight By Demons Wings" by Shai Hulud. It has never failed to make tears well in my eyes and give me chills. The lyrics, the way they're expressed... a four piece hardcore band manages to sound like an entire orchestra... it's brilliant.
When friends fail And mother is gone When god is silent And mates fall out of love I still wake to confrontation Alone and unflinching I am not simply strong I may very well be the strongest man that ever lived Breathe easy, friend Let not bitter fruit sour your breath You were once a gentlemen...

"1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins
Just a beautiful song. Strange, almost, that it's in the GTA IV soundtrack. It was always a favorite of mine. 1979 was a good year for me. But this line...
"We don't even care, just where our bones will rest, to dust, I guess"
...gets to me. And I would never have even "caught" that lyric if I didn't always have the "closed caption" option running on my TV.

Perhaps not beautiful by anyone's definition, unless you're a junkie dying a slow death, but "Down In A Hole" by Alice In Chains is certainly powerful.

It' s not one that I'd ever get teary-eyed or choked up over, but in terms of raw beauty and power "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire is the first thing that comes to mind.
Also: "In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea" - Neutral Milk Hotel. I would cut off a prominent body part to be able write lryics like this... And one day we will die And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea But for now we are young Let us lay in the sun And count every beautiful thing we can see Love to be In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me
Anna's ghost all around Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me Soft and sweet How the notes all bend and reach above the trees
Others that come to mind...
"What's Going Ahn" - Big Star "Daisy Glaze" - Big Star "Skyway" - The Replacements "Bad" - U2 (esp. the live version from Wide Awake in America) "At Least That's What You Said" - Wilco "Elizabeth, You Were Born to Play that Part" - Ryan Adams "In a Ditch" - Scud Mountain Boys "Avenues" - Whiskeytown "I Am the Cosmos" - Chris Bell "Thin Blue Flame" - Josh Ritter

I'm going to name a few songs that no one has probably heard of:
"Oh Life (There Must be More)" by Alan Parsons - This was one of the few songs that has ever made me cry. Its about a girl lost at sea (or it could be a metaphor for suicide, it depends on how you interpret it). The way its sung and the lyrics are just so beautiful and powerful that it is almost draining. The images in my head are very vivid for this song. A music video would ruin it. Here are some lyrics:
Waves roll out Out to sea Tasting the saltwater Tears upon her cheek
Morning breaks She's not there Who could ever find her? Who would even care? [...]
The city lights shine seaward Swirling in a trance Her eyes upon the water Alone in her last dance [...]
And she sees her future falling Til it finds the ocean floor Oh life, she cries There must be more
Anyway, I would recommend that song to anyone.
I also like the song "Beautiful Ride" from Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. I know its a funny movie, but the song is so well-written and arranged that it is very pretty. It sounds like it could be a hit. It sends chills up my spine when I listen to it.
Lastly, "Echoes" by Pink Floyd is just amazing. Try to find a live version of the song, as they are generally considered to be better than the studio version. I have a bootleg of David Gilmour at Amsterdam performing it with Richard Wright (keyboardist from Pink Floyd), and it is awesome!

I've been listening to a lot of Aimee Mann of late There are a lot of beautiful or powerful songs I could add, but Aimee's my thing right now and I find her work very moving. yeah she's great...some other great ones from her 4th of July Today's the 4th of July Another June has gone by And when they light up our town I just think What a waste of gunpowder and sky ... So that's today's memory lane With all the pathos and pain Another chapter in a book where the chapters Are endless And they're all the same A verse, then a verse and refrain King Of The Jailhouse The King of the jailhouse and the queen of the road think sharing the burden will lighten the load So they pack up their troubles in an old Cadillac that's her in the mirror asleep in the back Baby there's Something Wrong with me That I can't see ...yeah I could go on too...but she's great To me she's the female counterpart to Ben Folds someone else I like a lot...I could quote some of his songs but that would get a little tedious

I have lots of songs that remind me of some really rough periods in my life, because they offered something that I wasn't finding anywhere else. A few that stand out in my mind:
Eulogy, by Tool Down In A Hole, by Alice in Chains The entire album Make Yourself, by Incubus Don't Change, by Ben Folds Five
