This is my first post ever on this board, and I feel that this is a topic which I have thought about a lot myself, and i have asked people this very question, and they always sarcastically said some insipid pop song.
My list similar to what people here have said already, like "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," and "an ending (ascent)" by brian eno
I would like to add
"Storm" by Godspeed You Black Emperor. I know there may be lots of people who rant about this band but I feel that for this song it is well deserved. The whole album Lift your skinny fists like antenna to heaven is extremely powerful and emotional and beautiful. This is #1
"This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" By Talking Heads, I feel is extremetly beautiful in its melody and also its emotive lyrics
"The Golden Age" by Beck. This song is cool and stuff
"2/2" Brian Eno. This is another Brain Eno piece from music for airports. It really is so beautiful. It just reminds me of riding on a plane and looking out the window at the sunset over the ocean and thinking about going somewhere, and the joy of seeing soemthing new, or going home. It reminds me of my innocense and the way flying was when iI was 3. back in '93
I don't know which radohead song is the most beautiful. as a somewaht ellitist fan of radiohead I tend to say everything by them is beautiful. I would have to say their songs "The toruist", Lucky", and motion Picture Soundtrack" are the best
"That's when I reach for my revolver" Mission of Burma. This song is certainly powerful. It evokes my teen angst from those halcyon days two months ago when i was a young kid.
"The Battle" There are probably many songs called this. I would like to highlight, however the Caitlin Cary and ryan adams song, and also the one by Hans Zimmer on the gladiator soundtrack
Anyway I once started a thread like this on a Sufjan Stevens messageboard. I don't remeber what any of them said except "Get me away from here I'm dying"
Well this concludes my first post on this fine message board you all have here. hopefully the course of the discussion hasn't changed wildly inthe time it has taken me to write this long meandering post, and that I have committed no message board faux pauxs
there are some others i'd liek to say, but maybe in the futre i will get around to it Nothing compares 2 U

Asleep by The Smiths is perfect. And speaking of Aimee Mann, "wise up" is great too.

It' s not one that I'd ever get teary-eyed or choked up over, but in terms of raw beauty and power "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire is the first thing that comes to mind. Just in case you didn’t know, I have to point out that it’s a David Bowie song that they’re covering. (With David Bowie singing if you have the live track.) For me one of the first songs that pops into my mind is “Fisherman’s Blues” by The Water Boys. It’s soul stirring a Dylan’ish epic. "I wish i was a fisherman Tumblin' on the seas Far away from dry land And its bitter memories Casting out my sweet line With abandonment and love No ceiling bearin' down on me 'cept the starry sky above With light in my head You in my arms" The song is full of sadness and longing, and at the same time hope, and finally at its climax triumph. Great tune.

Bowie performed it with them live, but I'm pretty sure he didn't write that song. I don't have the CD in front of me, though, but I could be wrong.

I've seen a couple clips of Bowie playing that with them - pretty good. My Funeral CD says "All songs written by The Arcade Fire, with help from Josh Deu on Neighborhood #2 and #3." Bowie isn't listed as a member of the band, though.

Another one that popped up on the iPod today that I thought fit this theme very well...blur's "This is a Low". The guitar "solo" with all those layered guitar parts popping in and out of the mix is one of moving 45 seconds of music that I've ever heard.
scotto263 - 2nd on "The Battle". SUCH a good song. Just heartbreaking when Caitlin & Ryan sing it together.

The Universal- It really really really could happen... Tender-never has an "Oh My Baby" lyric been so moving No Distance Left To Run
EDIT: also Best Days Yuko & Hiro

I agree with "In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea", great lyrics.
I just heard the LOVE version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", with George Martin's beautiful string arragement. I find this version so powerful and that I was drawn back into a memory made it even more so.

"Hurt" - Johnny Cash's cover of the Pantera song "Beautiful Day" - U2 "Gravedigger" - DMB I also have to point out that it's Cash covering Nine Inch Nails, with some lyrical changes to boot. And I can't believe anyone else knows it, but if there's a song that can instantly move me, it's Fisherman's Blues as well. Nice call, Monster X.

I find this version so powerful and that I was drawn back into a memory made it even more so. Good stuff. Martin made a great decision to use the demo version from Anthology as the base of the remix. As great as the White Album version is, Harrison's demo is really moving.

Doh! After looking into it I see you were right. I could have sworn it was Bowie, sorry.
