I guess I'd have to say alternative, of these choices. Stuff like Guided by Voices, Big Star, the Old 97's, Whiskeytown, the Mats, the Posies, the Clash, Television, the Pernice Brothers, and Teenage Fanclub.
Though I guess a lot of my favorite bands would probably fall under the "classic rock" genre - the Beatles, the Byrds, the Beach Boys, the Monkees, the Kinks, the Stones, the Dead, America, Neil Young - so I guess that would be 1(a) for me.
Mostly it's guitar-based pop music, whatever genre you want to put it in.

Aye there's a point I just thought. Soul really should be on here. Can't beat some Motown or Stax stuff!

you're right motown/stax/R&B/soul wasn't represented...I guess I coulda somehow combined that with Jazz...it's tough picking 8 terms to span the spectrum of music

Think you should have just had the general term "rock" to cover a few there, but as you said when you've only got 8 it's a pretty hard thing to do.

A lot of stuff, but mostly hardcore due to it's brutal honesty and passion.

I picked metal, because that's my primary preference and what makes up the bulk of my music collection. Classic and prog rock definitely have a visible presence. Alternative is high up there, because my high school years were consumed by the grunge era.
I might find a pop artist or two that strikes my fancy. Not a big rap fan, but I love Cypress Hill and House of Pain is okay. I enjoy Chopin and Beethoven. Bing Crosby makes the best Christmas music CD's..
I hate country, though, which makes me want to vomit profusely.
My biggest secret, though, is my love of electronica/dance/techno music.

Alternative, especially British alternative. (Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Las, The Verve, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, etc.) Mmm...Oasis. My total guilty pleasure. But I haven't bought any of their newer stuff (I'm talking the last 5 years or so). Have you? How does it sound?

Heathen Chemistry was pretty good...but Don't Believe The Truth wasn't too good IMO their first two albums are still their best

Wo ist meine indie-pop option? Also a bit of chamber/orchestral-pop. I love Belle & Sebastian and Maxïmo Park most, also Field Music and all their shoot-offs...and a bunch of others. A smattering of other styles, too, although most of it is pop-ish in one way or another...

Be Here Now crushed all of my dreams in '97! thankfully I started getting into Flaming Lips and Aphex Twin so I've never looked back!

IMO their first two albums are still their best Much agreed. The Masterplan was pretty good, too. I'll give Heathen Chemistry a whirl. Whoa. Oasis just popped up on my iPod. Their ears must have been burning.

Their ears must have been burning. yeah Masterplan, although not an "official" album had some great ones on it...I especially like Acquiesce and Stay Young...but like trumpymagicsnout said Be Here Now was a big misstep BTW...The Flaming Lips are easily in my top 10 bands of all time I haven't seen them live yet but from what I see and hear they look like they're an amazing live band...anyone seen them?

Seen them four or five times at various sized venues and when they filled in on the main stage at T In The Park for The White Stripes when Jack broke his finger in 2003. 50,000 REM fans standing in a field gong "what the hell's this?" at the start before ending up singing along to Thank You Jack White at the end because they were so good they won everyone over. Pretty incredible.
