Sorry if this was posted already. I didn't find it. I was excited to see CT get a review on DVD Talk, and subsequently surprised at the nasty tone of the completely negative review. It's fine that the author didn't like the episode, I'm just surprised how much animosity he seems to have for the very concept of movie riffing. Here's a choice quote: It's as if people like Hodgson et.al., lack the talent to create their own, original comedy, so instead like parasites they latch onto the efforts of others. People like Hodgson prefer to describe what they do as "[riffing] the movies we love," but that's really just a euphemism for contempt-laden mockery.

Guys a twonk, he freely admits to having written a negative piece about MST way back so he was never going to give it a fair crack of the whip like the guy who reviewed Oozing Skull. I've no problem with someone not liking it but his approach is utterly unacceptable unless there's a counterpoint to the review by someone who doesn't have his preconceptions. And I really don't feel any sympathy for the treatment of Corman's films, be they crappy transfers or them being mocked. the guy was a hack, a good businessman, but a hack.

Word has it that he was expecting a regular Wasp Woman DVD to review, not a commentary of it. That doesn't excuse it all, though - his personal dislike of riffing commentary in general seems to have spilled over into his belief that this type of humor is objectively bad.

Hahaha, that guy's hi-laaarious. I couldn't even get through that review, it's simply ridiculous. But check this out:
!!! That would be awesome. Imagine that! I wish I had me one of them plasma machines.

Great exposure for CT. There have to be a ton of MSTies who don't yet know about CT, and at least a few of them will be doing cartwheels when they get to this part: Turns out this Wasp Woman has been adapted as a self-described "movie riffing show" by a label calling itself Cinematic Titanic. It's essentially Mystery Science Theater 3000... it features that program's original cast Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu...

What always leaves me scratching my head with these kind of opinions is, if you don't like it, why watch? Obviously this humor isn't for everyone. Not everyone will get a laugh out of it. But it's not as if the Brains destroy every other print of a movie when they riff it and all you're left with is their presentation.
Also, why give a review to someone who makes it clear he hates the entire concept. If I hate Will Ferrell movies for instance, I'm probably not the best guy to go to for an objective review. I got the same impression as Captain Hygiene, that the reviewer was expecting the DVD of just the movie. But how is that even possible since it has to be ordered from the CT website?

I like what Trace says, "It's not like were painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa" - You can still watch your beloved tub o' crap unriffed if you want to.
Joel is a genius, the writer's an infant. I wouldn't expect an amoeba to understand rocket science either. ;D

Another problem I have with shows like this is that they perpetuate unnecessarily negative misperceptions about old movies, the kind of backward thinking that causes some to avoid black and white movies because they're not in color...
I want to know where he got this impression. I think CT and MST help build appreciation of old movies. Obviously the gang riffs them in a loving way.

Agreed. It's one thing to point out incompetence and crappy filmmaking, whatever era it's from. But there's a real love of classic cinema in the Brains' writing.

Oh I hate that kind of thinking. Yeah I know there are dumb people, but were not all mindless sheep. We can think for ourselves. MST doesn't force me think or respond or perceive things in a certain way, does he think were robots? I don't see evidence of that in all the reviews here, some things we like, others we don't.
The guy shows no respect for the individual or their intellegence. If anything MST got me watching some old B movies that I wound up loving. I never was a B movie fan, why waste my time on Corman when I could watch Kurosawa you know.
But I've since watched and enjoyed many of them, outside the MST realm. Like Frankenstiens Daughter - bad flick but a kick in the pants to watch, very fun.
Really, with that mindset, I shoud stop watching Red Dwarf, or I might start thinking all Brits are slobs like Lister. And since I can't think for myself I'd better burn my Sledgehammer DVDs because it perpetuates a negative misconception about cops.

Note of trivia: This guy recorded a commentary for Classic Media's release of Invasion of Astro-Monster (AKA Godzilla vs. Monster Zero).
I figured the guy must be cool if he watches Godzilla movies. Then this happened and proved me wrong.
Sky's quote sums up the review for me. These shows don't make me hate old movies, but rather helped build my appreciation for them.

I knew I heard the name somewhere before. Great, I own something with this guy's name on it. How akward. Best misguided line from the review: "The Wasp Woman deserves better. Hell, even Manos, the Hands of Fate deserves better. Skip It." I watch bad movies for fun but I have no plans of ever watching unMSTied Manos. Ever. And if this guy thinks Roger Corman used all the time and money he had available to him to make some of his "masterpieces", then he really is dumb. And this is from someone who thinks MST3k treats Corman too harshly.

Stuart Galbraith is highly knowledgeable about Japanese cinema in general and J-sci-fi in particular. He's written several books that are worth reading, "Monsters Are Attacking Tokyo" is worth hunting down for many of us here. So I respect and admire him on that level.
Too bad he has no sense of humor. He seems to hold a grudge against MST, he even trolled RATMM in the past.

I see this way of thinking on sites like BadMovies.org all the time. Some people get so upset that anyone would poke fun at someone else's "art".
The world is divided into two camps.
Those that think all movies must never be altered from their original form...
And the rest of us, who HAVE a sense of humor.
