I'd have to say I've never seen what other people like so much about the MST episode. I think it's an average (or just a titch below). The sketches are good, but the theatre segments never fail to bore me. It would have been a lot worse if they had decided to redo Santa Claus from S5...that's just a perfect ep from a riffing standpoint. The experience is in the riffing and since IMHO Santa Claus Conquers the Martians hasn't been decently riffed yet, I say fire away.

I do not like this idea. I was looking forward to a fresh holiday movie. I've seen the MST3K version of SCvsTM so many times, the riffs are classic to me. I seriously doubt they can top the old version. Exactly. I've watched SCCTM at least once a year for almost half my life. It's hard to imagine watching it without Kevin's voice riffing and without the great host segments.

It's 20 years behind them Specifically, I think it's been 17 years, but that is a very good point, and probably what CT was thinking. (Doesn't change my opion, though.)

Eh, to me this is kind of a bummer, cuz this movie is already a great MST3K episode. 'Nuff said.

I'll keep an open mind.
But when I heard something about a "Christmas movie" was coming soon, I was thinking that "Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny", a snuff film, if there ever was a snuff film.

Oh, I'm keeping an open mind, I'm just a little disappointed with a re-do, that's all.

Never understood what was so special about this one either. I've grown to like a lot of the Joel episodes more with repeat viewings but not this one. I just gave it yet another try a few months ago and the riffing still doesn't strike me as much better than average.

I think it's the fact that so many people have seen it. It was featured in "This is MST3K". It got/gets A LOT of replay at holiday time.
It's like when they use to do those "Star Trek Viewers Poll Marathon"s and "Trouble With Tribbles" was always the winner. Not the best episode, just the most known.

While I loved Santa/Martians on first viewing, these days it's pretty flat in the riff department. Last time I watched it was with my brother and his family, we put on Yucca Flats first and all of us laughed like crazy. Then Santa/Martian and that only got a few chuckles from the room. If the Titans fail in the reboot then I'll own 2 so/so riffworks on this flick. (crosses fingers they'll send one out of the park)

I think that's a big part of the answer. SCCTM was special long before the Yucca Flats episode existed. But really, it's the host segments. For the type of fan who watches the show almost entirely for the riffing, esp if they started watching the show later in it's run, it's very understandable how 321 would be underwhelming.

I think that's a big part of the answer. SCCTM was special long before the Yucca Flats episode existed. I'm not sure what answer you mean but SCCTM was "special" long before MST3k was even created. It was one of the more famous "special" movies, unlike say Manos. Which brings me to one more thing: The Essential Collection. Yeah, I have the Manos single DVD and as such, I didn't see the point of the 2 episode "Essential" Collection. I've rented the SCCTM DVD twice and that was enough to quench any desire for the Essentials.

This is probably one of the last movies I'd ever expect the CT crew to do. Because most of them have already done it before. I'm not so sure its a good business move, but I suppose I'll wait and see what effort is put into it.
If they're going to revisit MST3K, I can only hope they'll riff sequels and prequels to movies they had done back then, such as the rest of the Ator/Cave Dwellers films and the Master Ninja series. Not go back to actually covering the same material they worked on previously.

How does that acts as an answer when I didn't ask a question in the bit you quoted? So if I'd said that we laughed at Wild Rebels more, which was special long before SCCTM existed, does that change the "answer" or the "question" or the "specialness"? LOL, I'm lost. ;D I didn't laugh a whole lot during the MST version of SCCTM and I'm looking forward to hearing what CT comes up with in their attempt. That's really all I was saying.

You know, after watching their last movie - they really need to do a fun, whimsical, silly, funny, light movie. Maybe it will be good.
