I am considering the notion of making two mix tapes( or cds) for some friends of mine. How do you go about compiling and crafting your tape or cd. Which medium do you find best? I've read that there's some skill in making a tape.

I have two school's of thought...each song should connect to the previous one either lyrically or musically...of course there are no rules that you can't break for example going from one song to an exact opposite one in every way can work as well
also if you really want a challange try to make your mix tape/CD have some theme and/or arc. Always start and finish with a strong opener/closer...but all that is subjective of course

Yes, I'm a big fan of doing themed mixes -- I like the challenge. Some of my better themes have been Flora and Fauna, Black and White and Red All Over, and Sex and Violence. I generally try to do a subtle shading from style to style, since I usually have a bewildering array of musical genres on one disc.

Themes are all well and good, but starting with slow songs, peaking with songs with a fast tempo, then ending some slower than the ones you began with are the best, in my opinion. If you want to take it to the next level and providing you have the DJ equipment necessary, do a continuous mix, preferably with seamless zero-second track spacing, with drum rolls, bass lines in similar keys, etc. leading into other songs back to back.

I like to follow a nice Chopin piano piece with some speed metal. Musical whiplash is such a fun thing.
Plus, I hate my friends.

I know I'm weird, but I like putting different versions of the same song on a CD. I made one that contained 24 versions of "Fly Me to the Moon"--ranging from the classic Sinatra take to female singers, reggae, Japanese pop, instrumental jazz, etc.
Like I said, weird.

Not weird at all! I love that kind of stuff. It's crazy how many versions there are of "Walk On By", "Oye Como Va", "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" / "Tramp", "Take Five", "Also Sprach Zarathrusta", "What's Going On?", each that put a new spin on it.

I have a mixtape that I called "The Butles" where I put A Beatles song followed by the corresponding Rutles song that parodied it example: All You Need Is Love/Love Life...Help!/Ouch!....Twist And Shout/Number One(the instrumental accompaniment is exactly the same) etc. I also like to do stuff like put the Smashing Pumpkins song 1979 followed by Perfect...that stuff is fun
