I'm not a fan of Christmas music. Most of it is so repetitive and cheesy. If I have to hear one more commercial based on "Carol of the Bells", someone's going to get a tennenbaum crammed up their wenceslas. What's even worse is if it's a "funny" Christmas song because the novelty wears off by the tenth year in a row.
Humbug.
But this year, I was struck by the carol, "O Little Town of Bethlehem":
"The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight."
I guess I've never thought about that line before. It's pretty heavy duty. I think I like that song now.

Happy Xmas (War is Over) - John Lennon Jesus Christ, Big Star (Love that tympani) but I actually perfer the remake by Considering Lilly
Always liked Rebecca St. James Christmas CD
What else, Chuck Berry doing "Run, Run Rudolf", "Father Christmas", The Kinks, The Waitresses "Christmas Wrapping", The Pretenders "2000 Miles", Billy Idol "Yelling at the Christmas Tree"
There are probably a few I forgot. XTC did a couple under the name "The 3 Wise Men" but I've never heard them.

It's pretty heavy duty. I think I like that song now. for me, the traditional/older/whatever Christmas songs get a special pass...I'm not critical of them(especially the hymns/carols) they are connected to the joy I have experienced at Christmas/childhood memories. They might be cheesy or whatever but to pick them apart is missing the point. To me, the words are merely the sound your mouth makes when singing the melody, if that makes sense. In other words, the lyrics could be in a foreign language I don't understand for all I care because their message is of little importance to me...because the message is all the same. Although I have to admit the Santa Claus ones are too silly for my adult sensibilities now but, usually that's also because those melodies aren't interesting either therefore the words stick out more. The "pop standard" ones are pretty much in the same boat but I'm more objective about them...but once again some of them I don't think too much about because I don't listen to them 11 months of the year. It's more about the positive aspects of them that I'm interested in. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the the type of person that goes overboard and is all about Christmas songs at Christmastime but when I hear them...I guess the best explanation is that I hear them with a child's ears. But, then again, I don't go to church or in anyway find myself forced to listen to these songs anymore than anyone else is. So I'm not overwhelmed by them (at least not as I see it). It's only one month I hear them...if I just heard Britney Spears or Nickelback or whatever one month a year and as frequently as I hear Christmas songs then I might be less critical of them as well.

Chuck Berry doing "Run, Run Rudolf" This is my all-time fave. Also Oasis did a good cover of "Merry Christmas Everyone."

I like "Carol of the Bells" if it's done with actual bells. We sang it in my high school chorus one year (yes, it does have words), and it was very pretty, if I do say so myself.
Also, the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York."

When I worked retail, one of the Christmas songs on the PA loop was Feliz Navidad. I heard it so many times, I thought I'd never get it out of my head. For some reason, though, I've come to really like it. I guess I've had enough time to heal.
Oh, and it always makes me hungry for Nachos Navidad because Taco John's uses a modified version of it in their commercials during the holidays.

I love Christmas music and play it in my car constantly during the season. I don't know why exactly. Most of it conjures up very happy memories I guess. My wife will only tolerate it on Christmas eve and Christmas day. She just doesn't like it much.
I like the traditional carols the best.
Hark the Herald Angels Sing The Candle Light Carol Bring the torch, Jennette Isabella ...and so on. The exception to this list is Silent Night. It always brings back memories of being up too late on Christmas eve in a sweltering church for midnight services that went on for hours trapped, half asleep and sweating in a monkey suit with a starched shirt with a collar two sizes too small. Help me, Jesus!
Contemporary favorites
The Christmas Waltz Sleigh Ride Baby, It's cold outside. Christmas time in the City Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer (so sue me!)
I don't like parody Christmas music. Ever since my dad got drunk and made us listen to the barking dogs Christmas record all the way through twice while he giggled insanely I have hated each and every suposedly funny, scatological or sarcastic Christmas song that's come along. They all bring back that awful Christmas with a morbid, hung over father and, well, you get the idea.

For some reason I've always liked The First Noel, but it kinda pisses me off when I see it spelled Nowell. I'm not sure why, but it rubs me the wrong way.

Got to have Slade and Roy Wood And Wizzard.
As for something a bit different I like Just Like Christmas by Low and Santa Dog by The Residents. The latter's for the naughty kids as punishment.

I was thinking about them as well, and the MST ep Laserblast. I wonder how many got the riff when Tom has Billy say... "Well, Merry Christmas everybody... ba, da, bum", in a summer setting?

Christmas At Ground Zero by Wierd Al.
It's got a 60's retro feel to it like Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, but with the whole Cold War/End Of The World theme going on with it. It's just a fun, festive little song about Christmas with Nuclear Fallout.
... Oh, and the video for it is fun, as well. ;D

Not a fan of the genre. Still, The Holly and the Ivy is lovely. Likely an ancient (pre-christian era) English song with new lyrics. Minor key, very nice.
