How many editions of Star Wars can George Lucas possibly release? Also I don't see what so "special" about the 2004 special edition. They couldn't even get Luke Skywalker's lightsaber color to be consistent and Darth Vader's lightsaber looked pink instead of red with that damn color correction. I don't know about you, but I'll stick with my VHS 1997 version that I had ever since I became a fan. That's the definitive edition as far as I'm concerned. Also I have the privilege of NOT seeing Hayden Christensen's ugly mug at the end of Return. The THX Remasters with the Maltin interviews, right? I agree that those were great. But I also kept my original FF Star Wars tape, the one that still had the red matte boxes around the tie fighters. That's the real original Theatrical print, by the way. Everything else is revisionist garbage. You may as well digitally edit King Kong to take the thumb prints out of his fur. You think I'm an elitist, snotty purist? Somebody has to be. So it's going to be another Rifftrax I won't get as it's another movie I refuse to buy on DVD based on artistic principles. But it's nice that Lucas' executive producer title allows him to rework other director's movies.

Ah, yeah. I don't think I bought that one. I bought the two-disc versions that came with the original versions ... because that's all I'll watch. However, for that disc set, I believe that the second disc version features only "Star Wars" in the opening crawl, not "Star Wars, Episode IV, A New Hope" like in the video box set my mother bought me.
I think I read somewhere a long time ago (adding more controversy to this release) was that Lucas had destroyed every available original copy of the trilogy in his effort to "perfect" it. Whether that's true or not is dubious.

You got the same version I did, and yes you're right. The second disc on the first film has no episode name or number on the opening crawl, just the main Star Wars title, then "it is a period of civil war..." No idea if these are truely the "absolute original" versions of the film, but they're near enough that they make my inner child happy, so there you go. As for the right version of the disc for the Rifftrax, as long as it's not a bootleg, you should have the right cut of the film no matter what DVD set you have, they ALL have the 2004 SE.

Having heard both the Rifftrax and the Blame Society iRiff, I have to say I prefer the amateurs on this one.

Man. I really liked these guys on MST, and I think Star Wars is a good choice, but I just didn't find this trailer funny at all. Come to think of it, most of the trailers they've put out haven't pushed me toward their store. I realize comedy is subjective, but... do they pick what they consider to be their best scenes for the trailers, or is it just some random scene? Does it get better than this?

Aside from a couple of good ones, I wasn't particularly impressed by this trailer. However, it's pretty rare that the previews they post draw me in, and I typically just buy the commentary if I'm already interested. It's rare that somebody else's choice of the best sequence overlaps with mine, and even on rifftracks I enjoy, the previews are often not great.

Part of the problem is that the entire Rifftrack itself is sub-par. It was a major disappointment, when you consider that BBI had been saying they wanted to do the first Star Wars for well over a decade now. There is a TON of "dead air" in this one. This doesn't make a lot of sense for a movie that most people have virtually memorized. It almost seems like they had a completed script, but then deleted everything that was too similar to the Blame Society (Chad Vader) iRiff, without replacing it with new material. A very poor effort under the circumstances.

Close Encounters, ET, Blade Runner, Alien, The Exorcist, Spartacus, etc. have all had high-profile re-releases and alternate versions, for better or worse. I agree that the original version (i.e. anything predating the SE) is preferable, but I can't dismiss the idea of a Special Edition merely on principle. That being said, I thought the Riffing was great, and well worth it.
