I agree, Sky, nice article. Shales has always given the show and its offshoots caring attention.

Yeah I found that quite disrespectful. Tom Shales is, of course, a fellow MSTie who was interviewed for the Comedy Central This Is MST3K making-of special; but the whole tone of the article comes off as a love letter to Joel while disparaging and dismissing the episodes that followed and the cast and crew that worked on the series after Joel left.

A very nice article but yeah, I don’t think he knows what he’s talking about with the interlopers comment. Otherwise it was good and I wasn’t surprised to hear about how personally devastated Joel was about leaving the show. That must have been a horrible choice to have to make.

I was bit surprised by the statement asserting that the Movie "flopped". I mean it obviously didn't garner much mainstream attention or appreciation, but was it really designed to? I couldn't seem to find any information online regarding the financial success of the film with which to judge its "success".

According to Box Office Mojo it made $1,007,306 and its widest release was 26 theaters.

$1 million isn't that great... Wait, what? 26 theaters? Well then, $1 million doesn't sound that bad.
I think that trying to gauge the 'success' of the MST3K movie is pointless because the studio pretty much gave up on it before it released it.

Okay, I had to stop reading that terrible article.
SCCtM is CTs 5th release not fourth. And then he goes on to say that they're releasing 8 in 2009 to augment the 7 released this year. Uh... huh? There's been 5 released, and 1 of those was in 2007. "The Wasp Woman" or "Earth vs. the Spider"? One of those is CT and one is MST3K. Plus yeah, WTF with all the dissin of the show post Joel?
If this it what passes for journalism on a "real" newspaper, I can see why they're all losing their jobs to the bloggers.

I have reported film grosses for Sony Pictures Classics for years. 1 million on 26 screens is not bad- but it depends on the markets it played, and how many weeks.

I have reported film grosses for Sony Pictures Classics for years. 1 million on 26 screens is not bad- but it depends on the markets it played, and how many weeks. I saw it twice in Miami and the first night they were handing out passes on the street to get people to go. The theater was maybe a quarter full. The second time I saw it was 2 days later and it was even less full.

That's crappy journalism. It takes maybe a whole 20 minutes to find the answers to the typical article fodder that that guy messed up. I could write an article that would poop all over that one and I didn't even finish Journalism school! ARGH!!!
And hey, lets hear it for the damaged-therapy goers, whooooooo! SEE WHAT ART DOES TO THE ARTIST!

Ignoring most of this terrible hack job of journalism I was intrigued to learn that there were creative differences that caused Joel to leave the show. Not surprising when you get that many talented and driven people together for a project. Conflict is inevitable.

Ignoring most of this terrible hack job of journalism I was intrigued to learn that there were creative differences that caused Joel to leave the show. Not surprising when you get that many talented and driven people together for a project. Conflict is inevitable. Joel discussed the creative differences a lot more clearly in the recent 24 Questions Article that Satellite News posted: www.mst3kinfo.com/satnews/brains/24q_jh.htmlI found Joel’s description of a potential MST feature film franchise to be particularly interesting. In a way, it feels like this has happened with Cinematic Titanic. Due to the wait time between releases, Cinematic Titanic feels more like an independent feature film franchise than a traditional TV series. The difference is that the theatrical screenings are live performances, which are quickly followed by DVD releases.
