Ah man, you should still post it. You get more views than I do and Phantom might say something grumpy and funny. This week I saw the combination of two of my favorite things, music and comics, via variant covers. Darwyn Cooke is providing golden & silver age looking covers for DCs line this month. One of my favorites posed the original Teen Titans as rock stars. Another I like goes even older school, a variant for the comic Wayward. I just love this thing, from the character’s look and pose to the colors. This cover comes from Marguerite Sauvage A few months ago Marguerite drew the interiors on a “Sensation Comics” story which saw Wonder Woman as a rock star, cool… And before that we had an alternate reality Gwen Stacy (with other Spider-Gals), playing drums in a band called the ”Mary Janes” BTW – is rock and roll dead? I saw clips from the Grammys and it’s all this disco-ee, dance-ee fluff from scantily clad teenagers. SNL the same deal, women (and one male band), performing this soft, toothless music. What happened to music with balls? What happened to screaming lead singers and blistering guitar solos that could set fire to a stage? Sigh – I’m going to listen to Billy Idol’s “Devil’s Playground” now.

I'm fascinated by competing local weather men (and women) on TV. The commercials are kind of funny. One boasts that they are the most accurate ("Roy over at channel 4 said it wouldn't rain on your 4th of July picnic.... BUT IT DID!") Or they come up with cute gimmicks. There's one that has this weather alert system... but you need like a manual to follow it. "So what does green mean again? Sunny? a chance of fog? Watch out for flying sharks caught in a tornado...?"
So anyway, this new add campaign cracks me up... it's the "We are concerned for you" ploy. They hammer that idea over and over. "We care about you, you matter to us."
The implication is that those those other weather bastards don't give two craps about you're life or your family's safety. In fact, remember the time they sent you out in a blizzard in the middle of nowhere and you had to drink your urine and eat your own foot to survive?
Those uncaring pigs! If you had just stuck with KTLA channel 6, you'd still have a foot and your self respect!
Anyway, here's the greatest weather report of all for your viewing pleasure...

I don't know why, but I always get happy when I recognize someone from an MST ep in another show. For example I was watching the Mod Squad on ME TV last night and spotted Doctor Ted Nelson chewing the scenery and chasing Julie with a car! I let out a breathless, "Hey that's Ted Nelson!" like it's some kind of big deal. As if I'd just seen Jesus Christ enter the scene, change Linc's water into wine and then, of course, chase Julie around with his super cool Jesus car. Who else gives a crap about Ted Nelson other than a MSTie? Oh and I was watching the Bond flick, Quantum of Solace this weekend and discovered that the actress at the end was Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter, Oona. Of course my brain went right to spice... "Hey, a Chaplin!"

ha - that's how i know i've gone on way too much about charlie here - you thought of me before him when you saw her! she's a beautiful girl, for sure. she's got her grandmother's hair and high forehead and her grandfather's love for the stage. i would have reacted the same way if i had seen doc nelson. someone posted a picture on tumblr of reb brown and his wife, cisse cameron - of course from space mutiny, as guest stars on three's company! ^i could only find this one, though - i'm assuming ^ is a joke?? please?

So SNL celebrated it's 40th anniversary on Sunday. On Saturday they re-aired the first ever show. I remember it well. I was a nite owl (still am) and Saturday Night could get pretty boring when your like 14 and can't drive and nothing was open anyway except for Dennys and 7-11. I was channel surfing and happened to see the name of one of my favorite comedians, George Carlin. So I stopped to see what this was all about. And it quickly became my regular Saturday night thing. It was called "NBCs Saturday Night" back then and it sure was different from what it has become today. There were two musical guests, and Carlin just did his stand-up act, broken into sections. That didn't really work out very well. He couldn't get on a roll as he could when doing it as one connected show. The skits were short and sweet and at the time there were none of the notable characters we'd come to know and love. And while eventually Belushi would become my favorite, in that first season the first star, the immediate star, the guy who stood out from the rest was Chevy Chase. It probably helped that he had the shows first regular skit, the news, which put the spotlight on him right from the start. So the 40th anniversary special was mostly good, with a few duds. The music didn't impress me, even Paul McCartney, because age has finally caught up with him and taken his voice. Which made me sad. But he at least got a laugh with Paul Simon in an opening skit. The Californians? Seriously? I hate the Californians. Maybe they did it because it allows for a large cast. But it went on too long and I wish they'd have ditched Bradley and Taylor Swift and used regular cast members, like they did with Laraine Newman. Someone like Eddie Murphy or the unfairly unheralded Tim Kazurinsky with Victoria Jackson (who got no attention at all) or Mary Gross (I used to love her Alfalfa) Speaking of Murphy, what a colossal let down. After all that build up, and he did... nothing. No skits - heck they could have at least done a "Best of Eddie Murphy" compilation. Celebrity guests? DeNiro kept messing up his lines and looked uncomfortable. Jack Nicholson was great, a natural. Too bad he never hosted. Highlights? Bill Murray, he's my main man. A treasure, and it was so great to see his lounge act again. I howled with laughter. Jane Curtain was always the best straight man... er woman. And because of that perhaps didn't get the same love folks like Belushi did. But she's a pro and proved she still has it in the Weekend Update skit. Seinfeld's bit was a hoot. Martin Short, with Beyonce (Maya Rudolf) was a riot. I loved the cast audition tapes. Celebrity Jeopardy, Wayne's World and the Lorne Michael impressions. Overall, a fun nights reminiscing.

i agree with everything. a co-worker and i were talking about it yesterday and he was pissed that after a huge build up, eddie murphy got nothing - not even a montage of his best moments, which he deserved. he saved that show's ass a long time ago. i'm glad he at least got a standing ovation from the audience. LOVED seeing wayne's world again. dana carvey has either had some excellent plastic surgery or he hasn't aged hardly at all since his heyday at snl. in his garth costume he looked like he walked straight out of the early 90's. i thought it was cool that the crew got the #1 spot on the best of snl list they had, and their impressions of lorne were hilarious. YES - poor mccartney - his voice was so weak. it hurt to watch/listen. wtf - why kanye?? why is he everywhere?? he has proven himself to be a total dick so many times - why would snl feature him as a musical guest? ugh. miley impressed me with her version of 50 ways to leave your lover - if she'd give up the auto tune and dance music crap, she could really do something. but martin short and rudolph killed it - it's funny how rudolph's beyonce is pretty much her whitney houston. i love it, though. very funny. i love seeing fey, poehler do the news with jane curtain. melissa mccarthy's impression of farley's famous character, matt foley, was pretty impressive (sunday was farley's birthday, i heard). emma stone's rosanna rosanna danna wasn't bad, either. and i hate the californian's too! i don't know anyone who likes that sketch. lorne must love it or something. but where else could we watch betty white make out with bradley cooper? you are right - it would have been better if they'd brought on eddie murphy - john lovitz - steve martin - it would've made it funnier. betty white can't save everything. but celebrity jeopardy was cool (le tits now ) the tribute to cast members that passed away - even land shark, even though the camera totally missed it at the end of weekend update. both chevy and deniro acted like they just woke up or didn't even bother to glance at their lines. jerry seinfield was great - his dig at brian williams - different celebrities in the audience with their questions - bob odenkirk! was he really a writer for snl?? i was around 8 when snl first aired. i used to watch it with my sister and her friends, who were all high. a lot of the jokes were over my head, but i would laugh when they laughed and wait for mr. bill to come on. snl did have a lot more music back then, i do remember that. overall, i really enjoyed most of it - they could have used another hour to get more stuff in, but it was still well done. must have been a hell of a project to put together. ^loved this

I'm disappointed they didn't show one of my favorites for the short film segment, “The Legend of Mokiki and the Sloppy Swish” - which was crazy weird funny. And I wish I'd have recorded these things way back when. There are some eps at Hulu and Netflix where they can only show 20 minutes of an ep due to rights issues. If you didn't see it then, you may never see them again. Edit: Oh and speaking of the Californians, I wonder why that kept returning, but the far more hilarious "Bein' Quirky With Zooey Deschanel" didn't. We only got like 2 of those. I remember when Zooey herself hosted, and played Mary Kate Olsen. That was a hoot... screen.yahoo.com/bein-quirky-zooey-deschanel-1-000000851.html

oh man, that was hilarious. taran killam as michael cera was my favorite part. taran is one of the best things to happen to snl as of late, imo. yarn! i was wondering if i missed it or not - did they have any time for chris parnell? he was such a funny cast member and i don't remember seeing him. and did they pay tribute to toonces, the cat that could drive a car?? i guess there wasn't time for everything. but i keep thinking of things i wish had made it.

Parnell was seen in blond wig, playing triangle, drums etc on "That's When You Break", but that was about it. Toonces got a name drop in one of the songs, but yeah that should have gotten a clip.
I just picked up the book "Live From New York" from the library. Now that I've got SNL in my head, I thought I finally read that (and it's the new updated version, yay)
