Anyay - Thanks for gabbing with me about this spice. It really sucks when you want to talk about something, but no one else has any interest. That's why I was hoping to win the LOC. I'd have at least had a couple weeks of conversation and debate with that.
As I said in an earlier post, the forums are pretty dead and the blogger posts on the classic eps are several years old. It's kind of pointless to leave a comment at a blog that hasn't had a comment in 8 years.
So I'll leave a comment here. lol Because one thing I found odd was people hating on Emily Litella.
Now it's true the character was based on a single joke. And they overused her. And It doesn't help that a blogger is watching these on a daily basis. In the good old days there was at least a weeks wait between eps... more when they'd take their mid season breaks.
I noticed that reviewers were particularly harsh on the Ruth Gordon episode. I agree that Ruth's timing and delivery was all over the place. And behind the scenes I guess she didn't like the gang. After the show ended she just walked off. Didn't say goodbye, didn't go to the after party. (which the cast held at the studio because they didn't want to accidentally bump into her out in the city.) Regardless, I thought the bit with her as Emily's sister was a hoot.
Overall It wasn't the best episode, but it had its moments. And I laughed at the Litella skits and am not sure why other's had the complete opposite reaction.
Of course that's par for the course when it comes to humor. Anyone who has spent any time on this forum has come across the line that "Comedy is subjective."
Yes Emily was done to death. But I got a kick not so much out of the overplayed concept or the catch phrase, but with Gilda's performances. She really put her all into it. I laughed at her indignation, her expressions and body language, the way she'd pound her tiny fist on the desk. The gag might have gotten stale, but the performance never did. That reviews failed to take that in account is what baffles me.
