Heck, I'm a fan of almost everything that Neil Gaiman's written, with the possible exception of his contribution to the script for the Beowulf movie (and even that was for aesthetic reasons, not because I thought it was bad.) His books Neverwhere and American Gods are fantastic (I also recommend Anansi Boys, though it's not "good" so much as it is "fun.") And I actually found something else of his called The Books Of Magic. I'd heard about those comics ages ago, but never thought I'd get the chance to read 'em. Next time I can swing by the book shop (and have the cash) I intend on adding them to my collection. Plus, he thinks Gene Wolfe is the best sf/fantasy writer alive. That means he has good taste. And Wolfe returns the favor by calling him our greatest fabulist.

Well, I got it and have looked it over -- pretty weird to be looking at a comic after all these years. I read a little ways, but I think I'll wait to go on with it till I finish the awesomely titled crime story: The Real Cool Killers.

Well, I got it and have looked it over -- pretty weird to be looking at a comic after all these years. I read a little ways, but I think I'll wait to go on with it till I finish the awesomely titled crime story: The Real Cool Killers. Don't feel self-conscious. There's a lot of really great stuff in comics now. I have a friend who's an Old English scholar. But he also teaches courses on graphic novels, and Watchmen is always there. In fact, if you like it, there are plenty of people on here who can lead you to really innovative and interesting stuff in the medium. Chris Ware, _The Preacher_, _Walking Dead_...those are just three off the top of my head of non-superhero stuff that's really, really great. Oh, and talk about synchronicity. I just this second got an email from my dad (who's in his 60's) asking about "This Watchmen comic that even old guys like me are talking about at work. Is it good?" I have a feeling that this movie, whether it ultimately tanks or not, may get people reading more and different comics than even the superhero movie boom.

Hey, because of Watchmen selling like pancakes DC has reprinted cheap, 1 dollar issues of Alan Moore comics to get people interested in his other works.
I bought the famous Saga of the Swamp Thing issue #21 reprint! (and I'm eyeing the volume 1 hardcover)

I picked up the Watchmen TPB because trailers for the movie have finally made me realize I needed to read this darn thing. It originally came out about five years before I started reading comics (and even after I did I was only a casual fan) and had heard all the great things, but just never got around to it.
Haven't started it yet as it just got here today and I'm going to be swamped for a week, but hopefully I can get into it soon.

I read Watchmen over spring break, and I have to say that it's everything they say it is. I am not at all partial to graphic novels, but I was so surprised by the depth and intelligence of Moore's comic. So I would count it as a novel in my book, no pun intended.
