(Couldn't find a thread, so pardon me if there's an old one.)
So...I was pleasantly surprised by the 5th cylon. I was afraid they were going to wimp out and make it Adama or Roslin.
And poor D. That was left field, but strangely appropriate.

I wasn't happy with the person picked to be the 5th, but I was very happy with how they revealed it.
I enjoyed the tension throughout the episode: would it be Dualla? Starbuck? Gaeda?
I'm looking forward to how they solve some of the other mysteries.

I wasn't happy with the person picked to be the 5th, but I was very happy with how they revealed it. I kinda liked it. It fits with the whole "Cylons are flawed people, too, rather than just evil monsters" theme they had going last season. But they haven't explained much about how it all works out or what it actually means (or what/when that flashback actually was), so there are still interesting ways they could take it. I'm just pleased because it doesn't (so far) fit the standard plot twists you could imagine with any of the major "hero" characters.

Let's hope more people don't kill themselves when this version of Battlestar ends.

The final Cylon was someone I considered, but probably only for a microsecond.
Of couse, why she wasn't with the other four during season 4.0 all makes sense now. That was the explaination I wanted.

As most episodes have, this one answered questions and asked many more. Firstly, since the final five are earth cylons that would explain why they can have children with the colonial cylons. Also, why would Adama send Kara and Leoben alone to find the source of the transponder? Also, what is Kara??

Does anyone know if previous seasons are watchable online? I watched some of the first season but haven't caught up with the show since then. All I could find on the show's website were web episodes, not actual broadcast episodes.

I've never watched them online, but if you have NetFlix, I'd say check 'em out as soon as possible. While the show did have some downs, it was mostly rock solid and worth checking out as a whole.

Great, great episode last night. I love how they twisted it from "whose the final Cylon? to "what is Kara?". And how they gave you the final Cylon, but instead of making it some sort of resolution, they just used it to deepen the mystery. I wasn't really suprised by who it was, but the revelations about the final 5's past and her last line to Tigh were very suprising.
And the "conversation" between Adama and Tigh was probably one of the best moments of the series so far.

I had Netflix for a while, but my problem is that I just end up hanging on to a DVD for weeks at a time without sending it back. I've been thinking about starting it up again, this might be a good reason.

That was one tense episode, and a fantastic comeback after a long, long layoff. I love how Earth has such a haunted feeling, it just added to the suspense of the Kara/Leoben storyline, the unearthing of the Cylon remains and Tyrol, Anders and Tigh's flashbacks.
A few other thoughts:
* Dualla - oh my god. Her moment with Gaeta where she's singing to herself ends in stunning fashion. I did not see it coming, and it genuinely shocked me. So sad.
* The fifth wasn't who I suspected it would be, but they did a nice job of bringing her into the open. And I agree with quinnmartin, the shift from "who's the fifth" to "what is Kara" was a great move. It's always felt like that was the bigger question, anyway.
* The nature of the thirteenth tribe. I'm so glad I stay away from spoilers and theories in general - I had not considered this scenario, unlike the condition in which they found Earth, which was always a possibility in the back of my mind. Just what the heck happened back on Kobol those thousands of years ago?
* Lots of great questions remain - where's the other Cylon faction? What is the rest of the history of the final five? Who is Kara? Who are Head Six and Head Baltar? And where do they all go from here?
Other than iTunes (or is it Amazon Unbox?), Netflix is probably your best best, Captain. It's a great ride if you get a chance to take it all in.

Another great moment was Leoben's reaction to Starbuck's discovery. For him not have any answers and to be genuinely afraid of the sitution just drives that moment home in a subtle, but highly effective way.
And to me, after she found her dead body, I did totally think they were going with the highly obvious move of making her the 5th. Which just made the ending with Ellen resonate much more than just the reveal of the 5th would have on it's own. At the same moment I was digesting that, I was also going "What does that make Kara then, if she's not the final Cylon???"

As Tigh started having his flashback, I knew it was going to be Ellen in the reveal. But I had a weird hope that it would be Starbuck as an older woman. That would be trippy- that he was married to her back on Earth 2000 years prior.
I'm convinced that somehow Starbuck's mystery has to do with both humans and cylons. She's like Anakin- she'll bring balance to the force. Like maybe she's the first hybrid child, and so she has powers they don't know about. They've been hinting for years that the hybrid kids are important (like how Hera's blood saved Roslin), and you've gotta think the fate of Hera and Cally & Tyrol's kid are going to be a big plot point for the last episodes. Maybe Starbuck connects with that story arc, too.
