Matt Smith.
I've never heard of him, although I see on imdb he's appeared in 3 things with Billie Piper. (Possibly the producers are hoping Piper's Rose will come back for another few episodes)
Anyway, David Tennant was great, so he's got a tough act to follow.

David and Billie had some of the most fabulous chemistry on TV.

EVERY Doctor was a tough act to follow, Shep.
You're right, though. I really like Tennant.
God bless Mad Martha.

Never heard of him. Apparently he wowed them in early on auditions, though. I say good luck to the fellow!
I'm really looking forward to the show under Steven Moffat. His episodes weren't just well written, they had a feel about them that was otherworldly.
Oh, and apparently past clips of all previous Doctors were seen in the Christmas special that just aired! Neato.

Wow...I just started watching Doctor Who. I'm 47 years old never seen it. Oh, I had a seen it as a kid, when Tom Baker was the Doctor, but it seemed lame to me, and I never gave it a chance. I had an understanding of the show due to my interest in science fiction (ie Star Trek; Star Wars), but figured I had enough obsessions, and a further one was not needed. Fast forward to a few months ago, I thought I would find out what it was all about. I wanted to start from the "beginning" and not miss anything. I started researching the BBC episode guide. I read all about William Hartnell (the First Doctor), all the behind the scenes stuff. Watched clips on YouTube, got DVDs from Netflix. I tried to get my kids interested in it with me, but they saw what I saw as a kid, three walls and lame costumes. So, I thought I'd step it up and jump to the Ninth Doctor and the NEW Dr. Who. THEY LOVE IT!! Me too. We've just finished watching the first season, and my daughters consider Christopher Eccleston their First Doctor. We just watched the first two episodes of season two (Christmas Invasion and New Earth). When I told them of the 'rejuvenation' process, they weren't too keen on the idea. Kinda like Rose, Mickey and Jackie. So, at the end of "Christmas Invasion" I asked 'em what they thought of the 'new' Doctor. "Yeah, I like him." Just like Rose...and me.

We just watched the first two episodes of season two (Christmas Invasion and New Earth). Nice! You've got some classic stuff ahead of you ("School Reunion," "Girl In The Fireplace," "Doomsday," "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood," "Blink," etc etc.) Enjoy! As someone who grew up with the old show it took me a bit to get into the new one because it struck me as very fast and chaotic (kinda like Dr. Who for someone with ADD lol). The first episode that really sold me was the sensitively written "Father's Day." The writing for the companions is so much better on the new show.

I just watched the special where they announced the new guy. It was wonderful stuff (the guy has a very different vibe than the last two Docs, which is very cool), and the middle section where Steve Moffat, RTD, and Dave Tennant gushed about how great all the individual Doctors were was my fav part.

Over the past few months my wife and I have also both become huge Dr Who fans. I’m not sure how I feel about the new guy, but so far they have been handling the series wonderfully and I’m going to assume they know what they’re doing before passing judgment.
I really love David Tennant’s take on the Dr so the new guy’s going to have a really tough act to follow. I do like how he’s not a popularly known actor, it helps make the Dr more mysterious.

I'm so disappointed that David Tennant is leaving before Steven Moffat replaces Russell T. Davies as lead writer and executive producer of the show. Moffat delivered some of the best scripts of the relaunched show, while Davies wrote a lot of the worst and most childish scripts.
Just a single Moffat season (series) with Tennant as the Doctor would be a fan's dream. Oh well, that's not to be so at least I hope Matt Smith turns out to be a good Doctor.

Moffat delivered some of the best scripts of the relaunched show, while Davies wrote a lot of the worst and most childish scripts. Absolutely agree! IMO Russell is a bit of a Gene Roddenberry type--a good guy to have at the helm, but not really the best writer himself. Though he did write a very nice goodbye scene for Christopher Eccleston's Doctor (hope he gives Tennant a good one as well) and that beach scene in "Doomsday" was lovely ("burning up a sun just to say goodbye" etc). Moffat's stories have been wonderful. ("Girl In the Fireplace" was the episode that really sold me on the new show. A classic!) Can't wait to see what he does with the show....I'd like to see Paul Cornell write some more episodes as thought his "Father's Day" and "Human Nature/Family of Blood" were pretty terrific.

Yeah, okay, I'm resurrecting an old thread. I just got into Doctor Who, too. I saw David Tennant in a Comic Relief sketch, and thought it was pretty funny, and so I figured I'd give Doctor Who a chance. I started with "The Christmas Invasion" seeing as my Who fan friends were always talking about Tennant, so I'd start where he started. Oh my gosh. I'm right now at "The Impossible Planet," and I'm kind of in love.
Not to the obsession part (you know, fanfiction, shipping characters, and the like, because I do not need any more obsessions), but it's quickly becoming one of my new favorite shows. (Actually, with this, QI, Blackadder, and Top Gear, I'm watching much more Brit TV than I am American.) I thought it would be darker, but I love that there's a definite comic thread that runs through the show. Actually, when the Doctor started quoting "The Circle of Life" during his Humanity-Is-Wonderful-Just-Give-Them-A-Chance speech in "The Christmas Invasion," I was sold.
And I adore David Tennant as the Doctor. He's enthusiastic and snarky, he wears Converse, and I love his hair.

When Doctor Who was being brought back I worried that it would be very stait-laced and serious like Battlestar Galactica (and that didn't interest me at all).
Luckily, when early reviews of the first episode complained about the silliness of The Doctor wrestling with a living, disembodied, plastic arm I knew we were in good hands.
