Man On Wire
A documentary about Phillippe Petit, the man who in 1974 walked on a wire that he had set up between the towers of the World Trade Center. The movie explains how he and his cohorts pulled it off. It's a fascinating, well-made film that uses archival footage, still photos and interviews with the principal figures. One interesting revelation is Petit's attitude towards his wirewalking. He doesn't see it as a daredevil-type stunt, but as a work of art. I don't know if he's 100% sane, but he is certainly passionate about what he does. The movie does a great job of communicating that passion.
I really liked this movie. It perfectly captures a moment in time. It's also poignant in that it shows the Twin Towers in all their majesty. The still photos of Petit's walk are breathtaking. Highly recommended.

Man on the Moon
I've always loved this movie, but have never purchased it. Found a nice copy used and cheap, and I didn't hesitate.
Still love it. Jim Carrey is excelent, and the story of Andy Kaufman is well told. Definately an alltime favorite for me.

I put it off for years, but in the interest of making the marathon as complete as I can, I finally watched Inspector Gadget. Great googley moogely what a noisy, unfunny mess of a picture. Gadget is undoubtedly one of the worst scripted, acted and directed movies I’ve ever seen.
Chaos in and of itself does not automatically equate to fun. The filmmakers were unable to make that distinction
Also.. “Firehead” – It sounds like a painful rash… which in a way, it was.
A critic on the box describe it as “Red October meets Batman”, so I gave it a go. It was more like “Future War doesn’t meet Puma Man”. It has nothing to do with a crime fighter, or nuclear wessles… it was just painful and is about a Russian guy who can shoot lasers from his eyes. It’s not even superheroey enough for the marathon.

High Fidelity – The Guarneri String Quartet, directed and produced by Allan Miller. You know those middle-aged or older couples who kvetch at each other all the time, polluting the world with their venom. I always thought of them, "geez, get a divorce already!" But when a terrific group of musicians has the same problems, I'm willing them to stay together to keep making marvelous music. And so they did, retiring only this year.
West Side Story. You know, the story isn't a bit dated. Even the slang holds up pretty well. What's dated is the camera angles and choreography. Isn't that odd...? Bernstein's music is...well. Indescribably brilliant, is as close as I can come. The moving wedding scene, where they marry themselves in the wedding dress store, made me think of the newer version of that, from Cold Mountain, "I marry you, I marry you." Pretty terrific scenes, those, even though I'm not that gullible a romantic.

Nights in Rodanthe. Romantic mush but I liked it. I wish the love scenes were more sexual but you can't have everything. Atleast it has Richard Gere, an oldie but a goodie.

Well I didn't watch that one but I did do another Filipino flick. Man if there's anyone who loves comic books as much as the USA, it's the Filipino's Zsa Zsa ZaturnnahIs a musical comedy about gay beautician who gets hit on the head by a pink meteor and turns into the female superhero Zaturnnah. Like most films from that area, the FX are way bellow Hollywood standards and it is choppy... AND shrill, but damned if I didn't laugh a lot. What a crazy movie. But they use the word fag a lot, the gay characters call themselves and others that a lot. Hmm, I always thought that was an offensive word, or is it one of those deals where certain people can say it, but others can't? It's so hard to be PC these days, I'm not sure what is or isn't appropriate half the time so I kept that aspect out of the review.

Premonition (all these are free from the public library, understand.) Movies like this are the rice cakes of cinema. Not very tasty, but reliable in their blandness. Not very filling or nutritious. Gives your teeth something to do for five minutes. I do think Bullock is underrated as an actress, and this was not 90 minutes I resented spending. There wasn't awfulness to cringe away from. Some days, I'm pitifully grateful for a movie this mediocre, since so much of what gets put on film is so awful.
Midsummer Night's Dream (1999). Loved it. My favorite of the comedies in any case, and in this version, good casting, interesting edits, appropriate special effects, funny and moving.
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. The film industry is fascinated with itself. Them: "Oh, poor us, we're such artistes, more sensitive than the little folk, and that's why we drug/screw around/hit our spouses and children, etc, poor us. Let's make yet another film about another one of us self-indulgent infantile jerks, isn't it all so very fascinating?" Me: "no."
The Darjeeling Limited. I wished I liked Anderson more--at least he has a personal vision and some quirky originality. But I don't like him a whole lot, and not just because of the sexism and racism in here. He's always too...glib. Glib sometimes, whiny others, and when he strays near a real human emotion, he jerks away from it quickly.
Miss Potter. More rice cakes, this time the kind with aspartame. Sweetsie, but not quite so much so that you actually contract diabetes while watching it. Still, I can't imagine an adult heterosexual male sitting through this unless he thought that by doing so, he might get laid later. (please do correct me if I'm wrong.)

Hmm, I always thought that was an offensive word, or is it one of those deals where certain people can say it, but others can't? Yes. Reclaiming or rehabilitation of words like "(I'M NOT A RACIST!)," "fag," "queer," "dyke," "fatso," is a complicated issue which can be made really, really boring by reading academic treatises on it, which I did. I'm a recovering academic now, though. (Goddess grant me the serenity not to google this and give you sixteen references.) Thanks for the review!

The Bermuda Triangle. 70's camp about a group of boaters trapped in the mysterious Bermuda Triangle. How John Huston got stuck in this is beyond me. Pure camp and badly dubbed. It's great riffing material.

Of Unknown Origin. Peter Weller vs a Giant Rat. Imagine if Roman Polanski directed Ben. Very disturbing and psychological (for a killer rat movie anyway).
