Primer Independent film about some guys who invent a device that permits time travel, while working in their garage, and the consequences of their use of the device. Good overall, and a great semi-realistic vibe, it really feels like something from the early days of computers, when computer companies were started in people's basements or garages. I liked it, but it just never quite gave me the kick I was hoping for when the consequences of the characters' actions caught up with them. The story was there, but I just didn't quite feel as much for the characters as I'd want.

I liked that one too. The realistic vibe was impressive, as well as the quality considering the meager budget.
Inside This is a French horror thriller about a pregnant woman being attacked by an unsettling female home invader intent on cutting out her baby. This is one gruesome flick, and I enjoyed it. Multiple deaths by scissors (her weapon of choice), sharpened chopsticks, knitting needles, and one hell of a revolver to the head explosion. Gallons of blood, torrents even. Great fun, check it out if you like em violent and unsettling.
Frontier(s) Another French freak show, this one concerns some rioters who are waylaid in some kind of hostel/hotel run by cannibalistic Nazis. The protagonist is another pregnant woman, who the group hopes will become their new broodmare. This was also a fun ride, think Texas Chainsaw Massacre goes to France. Achilles tendons are snapped with bolt cutters, one poor soul is cooked alive in a pressurized steam chamber, and (my favorite) table saw through the shoulder.

Inside was one of my favorites from last year. Definitely not for the squeamish.

Frontiers couldn't even be shown at the After Dark Horrorfest, as I recall.

Kentucky Fried Movie Uneven, especially in the first third, but there is some brilliant stuff in here. The Kung Fu parody and the Courtroom drama were both hilarious, along with other random assorted stuff. Just a bit more focus was needed overall.

That was a great moment. I was aware of the film for a long time but never saw it at the library or anything, and only just now decided to buy it.

Defiance. Finally got to see this. It was great. The true story of the Bielski brothers, who saved 1200 Jews during WW2 by hiding in the woods. Plenty of action and great acting by Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber. Highly recommended.

I was having a bad day last Saturday, so I watched Kiki's Delivery Service. If there is a cinematic antidote to depression, it is Hayao Miyazaki.
It's a delightful film, I believe this is only the second time I've wathed it with the original Japanese audio (seeing it on TV a few times in the early part of this decade introduced me to Miyazaki). I love how well the broom flying scenes are choreographed. If witches really flew on brooms in the real world this is what it would look like.

Let The Right One In Swedish vampire film (Which means there are a lot of pregnant pauses) about the friendship between a withdrawn, bullied boy and a little girl... who isn't a little girl. Not a good vampire flick if all you want is slam bam violence and gore (though that is present) in your horror films... but if you can appreciate the poetic melancholy infused throughout the piece, it's well worth watching.
I thought it was well done. It's sparse, stylish, haunting... very atmospheric and in a strange way, beautiful.
The dubbing stunk to I resorted to reading subtitles.

Centipede! 2004
A stereotypical group of spelunkers go to India to do some spelunking. After much spelunking they are attacked by the title character, who looks suspiciously like our beloved giant leeches. Some folks live, some folks die. It ends. Hooray! For the fact that it ends.

Veronica Guerin Concerns something I hold dear, Ireland, and something I don’t. This is based on the true story of a reporter who went after drug lords (use of heroin was rampant in Ireland) . Cate Blanchett is brilliant and the subject matter was enough to fuel the outrage… but Joel Schumacher perhaps wasn’t the right man for the job. His work isn’t terrible, though it’s rather by the book. A potentially great film is then rendered into one that is good. The Wild World of BatwomanYes, yes, I attempted to watch it unmisted. I failed, but did add a review to the superhero website. Oh the pain, the pain! Do I dare attempt to locate a copy of Prince of Space sans shadowrama?

Joel Schumacher perhaps wasn’t the right man for the job. I just had to highlight this as possibly the most useful thing ever written about the entertainment industry. It's a shame more Hollywood decision-makers don't think the way you do.

Last House On The Left (2009)
I liked it, despite it being a remake. The original was rough around the edges and old enough, that I didn't think the idea of a remake was heinous. The filmmakers managed to turn this into an effectively grisly thriller that is helped out by some great performances (especially Garret Dillahunt and Tony Goldwyn). What is really funny to me is how graphic this movie is, with brutal killings and an excruciating rape scene (two people walked out of my screening), meanwhile the original (which is an after school special by comparison), failed to obtain an R rating in its day, and was banned in several countries.

Funny Games. What can I say, if you like a disturbing movie full of frustration at the characters then this one is for you. Still, it did keep me interested enough to stay awake through the whole thing. The movie doesn't follow all the movie rules for thrillers which is entertaining I guess but verrrrrrry disturbing.
