I haven't got round to watching Back To Earth yet...I saw part of the first episode but got bored and didn't watch the rest...but from what I've heard, I definitely need to finish watching. ;D

^Each episode was progressively better.
Oh, and there is a neat deleted Lister/Rimmer bunk scene on the DVD! Those of course are the backbone of the early seasons: Lister on the top bunk and Rimmer on the bottom having an insane conversation with one another. It was deleted for pacing, but it would have been the funniest scene in Back to Earth.

I got the blu-ray version and watched it last weekend and loved every minute of it. I love the references to Blade Runner (had to watch it right after also). My only complaint is I really wished it had been longer. Another two hours with these great characters would have been great.

^Well, Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) posted on Twitter that they just greenlit a new full series of Red Dwarf - so your wish is granted!

I bought the DVD and I dunno, there were laughs and the guys looked great but it felt rather flat all together. Plus I wasn't very impressed with the disc as a whole. The Dwarf sets have been stellar overall but again, the making of documentary, the smeg ups, none of it lit a fire under me and I wanted more. More of what I can't really say.
Overall it was okay, and definitely great to see them together again and if it gets us another full season that's a plus.

I listened to the commentaries and that helped. I mean, I had no clue what Coronation Street was (I still don't get the slang in the shop) and I'm not a fan of Blade Runner so that whole deal meant nothing to me. The commentary cleared up a few things. Maybe I should watch the movie again, but even then I think the ep will have more meaning for a Runner fan, over someone who's forcing himself to re-watch a movie he doesn't like in order to get all the references.
But at least a few things are clearer.
Oh and I couldn't spot the differences between the episodes and the directors cut.

Well, yes it is much better to know the references. I love Blade Runner and I knew of the long running soap Corination Strret that Craig Charles is now a cast member of.
I think that Back to Earth was a bit like series 7: more story less laughs, but I thought it was on a whole more sucessful because the story was more compelling.

Craig Charles let it slip that they're going to start filming two new series of Red Dwarf at the begining of next year.

Oh great. I might as well start having my paychecks sent to the BBC and save the middle man.
Or maybe Shep needs a maid.

I loved Red Dwarf but they're all too old. Shouldn't the character Dave Lister be a grandfather by now? Or something? "Back to Earth" was memorable in how unmemorable it was but that's it. I think of it like Red Dwarf "by the numbers" while season 8 was Red Dwarfish and season 7 was Red Dwarf-like. Season 6 was "Red Dwarf?". That's it, the rest was the real Red Dwarf.
It's dead. Doug, it's dead. Everyone is dead, Doug...

I got in the mood for the show again, and I thought I'd start at the beginning. Dwarf was finding its voice in that first year (and it needs Kryten), but there were still great laughs. Rimmer came off meaner at times (but maybe my minds playing tricks on me and he is always that mean) Interesting to see a heavier set Craig Ferguson playing Listers confidence and there's Ron Weasly's dad (from Harry Potter) playing Olaf Peterson. The talking toaster sounds a bit like Disembaaudio... are they related?

There are good eps after that one, but the overall quality was never quite the same imo.

Or maybe Shep needs a maid. Along with a whole team of psychiatrists.
