Benicio Del Toro in talks for Moe? JIM CARREY IN TALKS FOR CURLY?!?You know...as a life long Stooge fan, I decided a long time ago that I was going to go into the Farrelly bros long planned film adaptation of the group with an open mind, knowing that it will never replace my golden boys of yesteryear. I'm not sure how it would work, but I'm not going to judge. Even if this duo gave us the abysmal There's Something About Mary. But...this cast...is making me sick to my stomach. Del Toro is a maybe. Sean Penn is an eyebrow raiser. Jim Carrey is energetic enough, but I cannot possibly fathom him playing Curly. Sigh. Maybe I need images of this just to see what this group has in them.

If Sean Penn isn't Shemp, I don't know who is.

Of all the possible permutations of Del Toro, Penn, and Carrey playing different Stooges, I think I would have ranked this one the least likely. It's like they picked out random actors and decided which stooge they were least similar to.

I can't imagine any actors working well in those roles. Maybe Sam Rockwell as Larry and Kevin Spacey as Moe? Just be thankful it's not a Judd Apatow version, or we'd get Seth Rogen as Curly and Paul Rudd as Moe. Or be extra thankful it's not this: *shudder*

I swear, I'm probably the only person in the world who doesn't find Seth Rogen funny. He was tolorable in Zach and Miri, other than that... There was a rumor a few years ago that Russell Crowe was going to play Moe. That one kind of intrigued me.

It would have been great if Charlton Heston played Moe.

It would have been great if Charlton Heston played Moe. I think the movie would be better if they still do. I keep seeing "I Am Sam" in my head with a red-haired Penn trying to shove Michelle Pfeiffer's head into a vice. Lord, make it stop.

you need a face like a bloodhound for Shemp! ( See: Brideless Groom. The music lesson at the start: Larry is hysterical playing the piano, but Shemp's expressions of horror as the poor gal hits those "notes" are priceless.)

I just heard about this a few minutes ago while watching a bit about it on MSNBC. I...I don't know what to say, except...WHAT?
This could be really painful, but I'm intrigued.
Though when I was two, my dad showed me the Three Stooges and I immediately imitated what I saw by poking him in both eyes with my fingers. I'd hate to think the damage I could do by seeing this as an adult! ;D

....Sean Penn....as Larry?
Jim Carey as freaking Curly?
I may be alone on this, but if this turns out to be true, I certainly won't be seeing this movie...it just doesn't fit...

Have none of these artists done enough in their careers to convince you all of the value of "acting"?
Frank Langella doesn't look a damn thing like Nixon, yet he was FAR more compelling than the prosthetically enhanced Nixon in "Watchmen."
Bringing a character to life has much more to do with projecting a personna than merely having a physical resemblance.

Bringing a character to life has much more to do with projecting a personna than merely having a physical resemblance. I like Jim Carrey pretty well in his "serious" roles, but nothing he's done seems like Curly. His slapstick roles don't really scream "Stooges' to me. Sean Penn may (or may not) be a great actor, but he annoys me for some reason. Doesn't seem particularly like any of the Stooges. Del Toro is a good actor but so far removed from a Stooge that I can't even picture it. Even without any physical resemblance, the casting just seems horrible.

....Sean Penn....as Larry? Well, he's got just as much experience in beating people up! Thank you! Thank you! And don't go away, coming up next is more of the best humor 1992 had to offer!

You have an excellent point, and I do hope I didn't offend with my flippant comment. My issue is that all of the discussed performers have not provided any career evidence that they could pull off the physicality of these roles. And I don't mean appearance-I mean the comedic timing and even grace that the Stooges brought to their work. If this was a biopic, I would be more optimistic, as all three have provided solid work in that line. This is all my opinion, mind you. And in the interest of full disclosure, it does not help that this is being helmed by the Farrelly brothers, who I personally regard as pus-filled boils on the ass of American cinema.
