I just realized there's no baseball thread. We can't very well call this a sports sub-board without a baseball thread, now can we?
Yanks have been sucking out lately. I'm sure most of you are happy for that though... you jerks. Anyone catch any of the exhibition games they did at the stadium? I mean, I was expecting more out of the bombers after that performance.

Sat up until 4am last night watching the Twins online. Looked like another bad night then the 9th and it was all worth it!
As a sidenote my new avatar is the legend Jonny Gould who was the presenter on the MLB TV show over here. Shamefully it's now finished meaning there's no Baseball on terrestrial TV. There's rumours the BBC might do something after showing the Superbowl. Hopefully that'll be the case and the same people who did it for the last twelve years'll be involved as their work trying to get people over here into the sport was/is excellent.

Big Twins fan myself, and that ninth inning last night was really something. Too bad about the lack of baseball on television over there, Trumpy. I've always kind of hoped the game would take off a bit more overseas. My friends and I are thrilled the season is back on, though. We don't have to worry about what we're going to watch in the evenings for the next four or five months. Don't know who will win the AL Central, though. The field is pretty wide open, especially with Joe Mauer out for the Twins. At least the Sox gave us Joe Crede, though (sorry BethToHumans)

I've been a Cubs fan all my life. I lived through the '84 choke and the ball through Leon Durham's legs (damn you, Steve Garvey!). I lived through the '89 beatdown by the Giants (damn you, Will Clark!). I had season tickets to the '98 season (even though you were juiced up, thank you Sammy Sosa!). I even survived the epic washout in '03 (it wasn't Bartman's fault, it was Alou's, Gonzales's, and ultimately Baker's).
But now they're dead to me.
They had the best team and the best pitching going into the playoffs each of the last two years. Both times they were swept by far lesser teams- IN THE FIRST ROUND! Last year in particular was simply inexcusable and unacceptable. Their performance was bush league; and as a metaphorical stockholder in their company, they simply did not perform up to the requirements of my investment. So until they show some life and competitiveness in the playoffs, they are dead to me.
So I've decided to follow the Indians this season instead. Why the Indians? Because Indian fans and Cub fans have a lot in common. Plus, the Indians picked up the only Cubs who carried themselves with any respect during last year's meltdown: DeRosa and Wood.

Well, I admit I'm a lifelong San Diego Padres fan, having been born in SD and being taken to my first game at Jack Murphy Stadium by my dad. (Remember when ballparks just had normal names, instead of corporate names like "Qualcomm", "Petco" or "Bank One"?)
Anyway, needless to say, they are a hapless bunch this year, as they were last. Although we dropped our home opener to Los Angeles--with Dodger-killer Jake Peavy on the mound, no less--we came back and won Game 2 yesterday. Who knows, maybe we'll surprise everyone this year. . .but I doubt it. Still, I LOVE baseball season!

Like you, I'm a huge Yankees fan. Watch all their games on MLB.com I thought they would be a lot better than they have been against Baltimore. I think they'll be okay, though.

The field is pretty wide open, especially with Joe Mauer out for the Twins. At least the Sox gave us Joe Crede, though (sorry BethToHumans) It's on a satellite channel that costs a fortune so some people can see it. I watch MLB.tv. It's been growing over here and it's a cult thing. You occasionally spot people walking about in shirts. There's nothing greater than going down to Derby in England only to spot a guy in a Giants shirt and see him get that same flicker in his eye because you're wearing a Twins shirt. The best one was when I was wearing it in Glasgow and an American in a Red Sox cap shouted "YEAH TWINS!" in the middle of the street. He was probably relieved to see something non-Yankees as Yankees caps are the fashion amongst the scummy wee neds, most of which probably don't even know what the symbol means. The poor guy probably felt surrounded by the enemy! The biggest shame is that the powers that be dropped it from the 2012 Olympics in London to save money. They would've had to have built a stadium and so decided to scrap it. The people at UK Baseball were hoping for it to centralise the sport plus it featuring might have helped the popularity. Basically there's been a double blow in getting people interested in this great sport.

This is why pitchers should wear helmets...

I hate seeing that happen. Dangerous stuff.
Pitchers need to get themselves in a better defensive position after delivering a pitch. He was nowhere near in a good position to field that ball. These days it's all about falling off to the side of the mound to get that velocity.
The announcers said he had no chance to field the ball because of how hard it was hit. I think if he had been square to the plate instead of basically walking to the first base dugout he would have had a better chance to catch/deflect/duck that ball.
Still, hope he gets back on the horse soon.

Here's another one that happened last year to Padres' pitcher Chris Young: withleather.uproxx.com/2008/05/albert-pujols-hurts-peopleOuch! Chris is okay, though. I think he had to have reconstructive surgery, but he just won his first game of the season for SD this past Tuesday against LA.

Sad day in Philadelphia. I cried a little today when I heard the news about Harry. What made me feel better is that he got to see the Phillies win the World Series again. I will always remember him for that great voice and personality that made baseball something to look forward to. Thank you Harry Kalas forever.
