Beatles fans have probably heard this already but they are FINALLY going to update the Beatles catalog! (The previous releases are pretty woeful and I remember at Beatlesfest, one guy urged... "Could you please hurry up with new discs, most of us who really care about this aren't getting any younger and will likely be dead before you get to it") Thankfully, I'm not dead yet and am very excited about this. I am planning on saving up now and buy the 14 disc box set when it released on the 9th of September (though I can't find a listing and price yet) Here's a link that gets into detail into what they have done... TapelogMy only complaint... the mono versions will be released, but only in a box set. I will likely save up and buy this at a later date - but I wish they'd sell them individually as Sgt. Peppers in mono is the only one I'm dying to hear (Lennon preferred the British mono version of the album) And I wish they wouldn't keep ignoring "Live At The Hollywood Bowl" - Yeah I know it wasn't the most polished album, but it was a wonderful historical record of that era. Now, when are we ever going to get that supposed restored and reworked "Let It Be" film?

Well, I wasn't aware of this at least - I knew it was coming at some point in the future, but that was it. I find it curious that they're using what they call "overall limiting" on the stereo versions only. I've read good arguments for why the abuse of that kind of destroys the overall sound quality, so I hope that they follow their claim of using it sparingly.
I'm disappointed as well that the mono versions are only available in a box set. I've always read (particularly with Sgt. Pepper) that the mono versions were the ones that actually got the excessive studio care in their production, and the stereo releases we're familiar with were a bit more rushed.

I know I'll likely hear something that I wont like, but I hope for the most part the sound is rich and clean (I know some folks find Ringo's squeeky pedals quaint... I don't - they are like the black boxes around the original Stark Trek ships, master it out so I'm not distracted by it) I think of all the different mixes for "She Loves You", the one we often get on CD, is one where you can hear where Martin patched in music another take. And man that would just take me out of the song - so I hope that kind of thing is smoothed out. Edit: And as of today, I have $100 set aside in my "Beatles fund"

I'm currently trying to get all the original albums, so I hope I'll be able to buy the 3 I need separately.

I've been dying for the mono pressing of Sgt. Pepper's.

Can't wait. I do hope they get a better reaction then the new Rolling Stones re-masters are getting. Yikes!

UPDATE:
I had preordered the Beatles Mono box. I got an email from Amazon saying that due to overwhelming orders, the manufacturer expanded the original issue of 10,000 to whatever the orders call for. Then, apparently, that's it.
At least I'm getting one!

^ Yea I had heard many people were becoming upset that there were so few boxsets, especially the mono one, being made available. Glad to see that physical media still has some life in it! (I do like the convenience of digital files but not their lifespan ).

My only difficulty with spending another $200 for the mono, is the mono. I hate the whole, "voice in one ear, instrument in another" deal - I listen on headphones a lot so it's espcially noticble and distracting for me. I really, really want to get one, especially with it being in limited release.
What to do, what to do... (the $400 total is a major hurdle for me and my budget)

I'm so excited! I'm probably going to have to wait to ask my parents for Christmas for the remasters (since I can't afford them right now), and I'm still undecided whether I want on the mono or stereo version. My understanding is that the mono is good for the earlier stuff, but Yellow Submarine, Let it Be, and Abbey Road aren't in the set cause they were done entirely in stereo. So do I want the more complete set in terms of albums, or do I want to get all hard-core audiophile on this? In a perfect world, I'd get both, but alas, I must choose one. This is not an easy choice, for The Beatles are serious business. But in the mean time, my Special Edition Beatles: Rock Band set will be waiting for me when I get home from school today. I cannot wait to get my hands on that little plastic Hofner bass controller! ;D
