Alrighty, I just read the 200th issue of Sonic the Hedgehog, published by Archie Comics. I've been a loyal reader of this comic since Issue #6, and while there were some bad years in there (everything from about isse 75 to 100 is a blur, I confess), I've always been a happy reader. So I read the 200th issue nad realization dawned: how come a comic meant for a younger audience has a more sophisticated and compelling storyline than any of the really big major events that DC and Marvel have been doing lately? I mean, the last six issues of Sonic's comic here have made me care so much more than any final crisis or secret invasion or anything. I mean, Dr. Robotnik's gradual slide from evil doctor to mad scientist, Sally's clear loss of political power in the resistance's world, Snively's plotting behind Robotnik's back (and I so totally called who the mysterious figure he'd been talking to. She was the only major power in the comic who wasn't otherwise occupied and hadn't been seen for over fifty issues.) It was exciting to read, fun to watch, and (pay attention here, DC and Marvel) you didn't have to buy dozens of side issues just to follow the plot. An excellent read. And in only 76 issues, it'll be the longest running modern day comic book with only ancient mainstays like Action Comics and Detective Comics having longer consecutive runs. A good week to be a Sonic fan. "Way past cool" indeed.
