I was putting a bunch of holds on books on line and I thought I'd see what Hillerman had that was new... sadly I found out he died last October!
That made me sad, though he lived a long and fruitful life (He was 83 years old).
I like an author that can really take me into a culture and do so with respect and meaning (Clavel did it with Shogun for example) and Tony did it with the Native Americans. I learned and discovered something new and was entertain by those wonderful characters Chee and Leaphorn, and the mysteries they were embroiled in.
I'll miss his books and the people who inhabited them
Thanks Tony for the many happy hours spent with your novels. You will be missed.

I love me some Hillerman.
I've read so many so often that I'll sometimes be halfway through one of his books before I realize I've read it before.
His qualities are also his drawbacks...just like comfort food. Sometimes you love the things you come back for whiel other times you blame him for being repetitive.
But Chee and Leaphorn will always be wonderful creations. Both guys had sides to them that never sat easily with each other, whether in themselves or with other people. The fact that he could nail two personalities (and more) that were always struggling with their native vs. "America" identities was awesome.
(Mystery-wise, he'd occasionally throw in some piece of info a bit too late to convince me, but I can forgive him for the world/environment/culture...)
